My week

I open this week with prayers for those in the path of Hurricane Harvey.  This tragedy will be spoken of for years to come.

Pearl has been sleeping with me the last couple nights and it seems to be helping with her shyness. She's on the recliner with me and she saw the neighbor across putting trash out and I heard her vocals for the first time with a little growl.  She also barked for the first time as the next door neighbor left for work.

Tuesday evening I performed my second to last of the season at the Lincoln Tomb.  I wore my Girabaldi Blouse for the first time.
The ladies Garibaldi blouse was named after the Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi and was first popularized in 1860. Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807 - 1882) was an Italian folk hero in favor of Italian independence from Austrian domination.  During the Expedition of the Thousand campaign in 1860, his volunteer followers were known as "Redshirts"  for their bright red shirts with full sleeves and drop shoulder style.   It is these shirts and the volunteers who wore them that inspired the fashion. This blouse style was very popular during the Civil War.  I am portraying a German woman but his popularity was through out Europe.
It's supposed to resemble this:

I was fortunate to find this hat in a thrift store for a couple bucks but had to reshape it to make it period correct by using garter clips to make it curve down in the front and back.  It also had netting from like the '50s to remove.

I also took some other pictures.  Peggy got a new dress.
 Our Lincoln Monument Association table.
Our moderator for the event seldom gets mentioned but should.
Ya got to love the newest member.
Wednesday I stayed home almost all day.  A little bit of the slumps so I worked it off with a little housekeeping.

Somehow, Pearl greeted me in the bathroom the other morning without that harness and drag leash just wagging her tail. I found the leash tucked under the rocking chair and she must have wiggled free. I need that tail leash to lead me to her when she hides in a corner. We may be weaning off of that 24 hour leash if she can come to me and be found. It's good to see a tail wag rather than between her legs. Next ... will she be happy to see strangers or a one-person dog? Well I had a chance to test it at Reflections.

Pearl wore her vest that says "In Training".

I think Sophie is teaching her to be a pet.  However, Sophie barks a lot more lately.  Now so is Pearl when I come home.

I had a little trouble with the mouse pad on my laptop so I took it in to BLH Computers along with the iMac that belonged to my husband.  They fixed the mouse pad and recycled the iMac which is no longer up-gradable.   I saw 6 choppers go over my house.  Later I learned. Springfield Firefighters Local 37 member and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Trey McCormick flew over Springfield. He along with others shown are headed south before they deploy to Afghanistan. This will be his 3rd tour as a CH-47 Chinook helicopter pilot.

Saturday I participated in the Edwards Place Victorian Fashion Show.  I wore my wrapper early in the program and changed into my bustle dress.  This was taken after I walked the runway but there were still a few others behind me.

Here are a few pictures that I took before we were queued up.

Afterward, I changed and took my dogs to Stuart Park's dog run area.

Sunday was typical time with my son and his dog, Moe.  Then Moe changed the routine by rolling in some wild animal crap in the back yard by my wood pile.  He was not going home like that.  So he had a bath.

Monday I took Sophie on 2 therapy dog visits which were very good visits.  In the evening I went to our dance practice.  Now that school has started, the streets are different when walking the dogs.   Things should be winding down a little as we approach the fall events.

Blessings to all!

My week

Ahh cicada season is upon us.  The name is directly from the Latin cicada, meaning "tree cricket".

Talk about funnies, this was at the other beer hut while I was working at the state fair.  Notice the spelling "Heer".  When I told the tent manager, she said it applied anyway because veterans were working the sales and it drew attention.  Heer in German applies because it means army.

Tuesday I got some compliments about my presentation at the Lincoln Tomb
I know I won't make my sister's farewell party but this was clipped from facebook:
Wednesday, I got up at 5AM and noticed that Pearl had an accident. I put her in the back yard but more or less pushed her through the doggie door flap to the back yard to show her how to use it. I went back to sleep and got up again at 6AM and she was inside so she must have figured it out.  She has come inside but so far I haven't seen an exit.  Later I had exercise, some shopping, lunch with Michael and my routine annual physical.

Thursday I went to yoga and I always were slip on shoes but they were not the same pair.  I don't think anybody noticed since it's a bare foot activity.  Later was dog visiting day

Thursday evening the new neighbors across the street were starting to move in.  It was dark and he hit his own flag pole and mail box with the Uhaul truck when trying to back in.  So I went to survey the damage in the morning.  He fixed it on Monday.  Probably fix the most embarrassing thing while moving in.

Friday morning I did my fasting blood draw. I made a lousy pancake.  I drank my jar of lemon wine from County Market.
It was so-so.  Tasted more like a white wine than lemon.

Saturday I went to Galesburg Heritage days. Someone shared the profound statement this past weekend that we die twice: the first time is our last breath and the second death is the last time our name is mentioned/remembered.  I found this video from Galesburg:

Sunday I had didn't have a chance to sleep in because I went to Mass with our Catholic War Veterans at 8:30 followed by a breakfast together at DJ's Cafe.

Catholic War Veterans Bishop Joseph McNicholas
Post # 1916 will be in the back of church today, after
8:30am Mass. They would be glad to answer questions
regarding membership in their organization or their
Memorial Mass Program. Any Catholic Veteran in
good standing is eligible to join, regardless of when or
where they served.

Pearl got her Training vest.  Maybe this will help her come out of her shell.
Now she seems to have a bulge between her toes.  She started biting and licking Sunday night but Monday morning I could see it more clearly.  I got her scheduled for her first monthly appointment in September but called about this and got a squeeze in appointment for Wednesday.  Our regular veterinarian is out of town making bookings with the other very difficult.
Pearl's adoption packet came with the following poem that motivates our relationship:
Baggage (The Meaning of Rescue)
By Evelyn Colbath(c)1995 Baggage All rights reserved

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed,I'd like to open my baggage,Lest I forget,There is so much to carrySo much to regret.
Hmmm...Yes, there it is, right on the top,
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,And there by my perch hides Fear and Shame. As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave,I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me. Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack?Or will you just look at my things,And take me right back?Do you have the time to help me unpack? To put away my baggage, to never repack?I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,But I do come with baggage,Will you still want me? My Week

You wouldn't know it was August but I was able to turn off the air conditioner for 5 days.
Since I had back surgery for Spondylolisthesis on April 27th,  I just wanted to show you the cards I got from Soldiers Angels.  They matched the size of the stack I got from family and friends.  Deeply moved and no doubt it aided my recovery.

Last Friday I was at the dedication of the Springdale Cemetery entrance and see if you can find me in this crowd:
Tuesday evening my guests said they saw a red fox at the Lincoln Tomb across from the old vault where I do "Distant Memories".  They were a bit surprised when I said I didn't see it but I knew there were a few foxes at Oak Ridge.  I believe the sun was in my eyes.

Thursday I got a baby sling off of Facebook sales to carry the new dog that won't walk on a leash.
It was only $10.

I took Sophie to Reflections and I was pre-notified that it was "pajama day".  That would have been an easier theme for me in the winter time.  You would think that the residents would be in PJs too but it was only the staff.
Afterward I went over to the church as a member of the American Legion honor guard.  There were 4 of us and we took 15 minute intervals at both ends of the casket.  Past Commander Kingery was a 66 year member of American Legion Post 759.

Friday my rescue pekingese, Pearl, walked on a leash around the block for the first time. She's more of a follower thanks to Sophie and me. She did her job too. I've been kenneling them together over night to get used to each other and as a precaution, I've slept nearby on the couch in the living room.  Welcome to Pet life Pearl.

Saturday I worked at the state fair Bicentennial Tent.  We were selling tickets to a beer tasting of 19 local brews to be voted on as the best to be named our official state of Illinois Bicentennial Beer.

Sunday was veterans day at the state fair and the program was the best yet. Guest speaker was the most recent awardee of the Medal of Honor: Spc. 5 James C. McCloughan. He seemed so humble and and genuine. He even sang "Wind Beneath my Wings" and "Proud to be an American". His speech brought tears to my eyes. McCloughan even was in the parade. The Gold Star families were honored also. I set up a display table for the CWV and our banner for the Women's Overseas Service League. AMVETS sponsored a "kids corner" so I went in the bouncy house and got my face painted with a rose. I had a photo taken with Mrs Illinois. Veterans got to ride the tram for free and that was a first for me in all these years at the fair.
Here's an overview shot of the Veterans Day expo at the fair.
I brought a desk set as an altar on our table.
Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Director Erica Jeffries introducing Medal of Honor James McClaughan.

There's a recording of Spc. 5 James C. McCloughan's speech.  Zip over to 14:30 and 19:00 on the time slider to hear him sing.

Army Veteran George Pempek was named Illinois Veterans' Patriotic Volunteer of the Year. George Pempek's award had to be presented at his seat since he can't walk very well.
First he got the quarterly award and now the annual.

Staab Funeral Home was nominated by our Catholic War Veterans post and was named Illinois Veterans' Business of the Year at the Illinois State Fair.

My face painting of a rose bud.

Pearl had a poo poo in the house when I got home but it was the longest she's ever been left without a break and she attempted to do it on the piddle pad but missed.  Glad I have easy clean tile.

Monday I also worked a beer shift at the fair.  The weather has been great...so far.  Rain is expected later this week.

I watched "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" on Vimeo here:

Maybe you might like it too.
Ah the rudeness I've seen and then this historical etiquette:

"Giving advice, unasked, is another piece of rudeness. It is, in effect, declaring ourselves wiser than those to whom we give it; reproaching them with ignorance and inexperience."

My Week

Monday I had deep tissue massage on my legs and ham string that seemed to have helped.  For a little gal, she really got into it and it even hurt a bit  but I felt a little better the next day.
Sophie had a trip to a new groomer.  She went right to Regency Care afterward and seemed rather listless all day.  Wouldn't walk or eat.  I gave her half an aspirin in the evening with water from a dropper and she seemed a bit better in the morning.

I like the way she trimmed her behind for better hygiene.
Tuesday's photo at the Lincoln Tomb

Wednesday I skipped exercise class.  I just felt tired.  I did go to the Goodwill and picked up a nice display case for our Soldiers Aid Society for things we don't want people to touch.  In the afternoon I went to St John's Hospital with Sophie.  Taylor, the activity director on the geriatrics floor, was recently featured on facebook.

On the way out of the parking garage, I notices a woman leaving with 2 collies.  I recognized her as Rose Hutches who is the local examiner for Therapy Dog International qualifications so I stopped to say hi.  She had just visited with pediatrics.  Mini horses are some of our favorite visitors! These therapy horses, Bailey and Jasper, visit our patients about once a month and they are truly enjoyed by everyone. Thank you to Andra Ebert with Heartland Mini Hoofs- a 501c3 mini equine visiting program. for bringing them out to St. John’s.

In the evening I went to our American Legion Riders meeting to discuss our upcoming Hog Roast for Honor Flight.  Prior to the meeting, I asked Ron to bring me some tomatoes from his garden since I couldn't plant one this year.   It was nice to have fresh tomatoes.  Afterwards I stopped by Dianne's house to give her 6 bags of stuffed animals from the neighbor who sold her house.  Dianne is a state trooper and she'll be using them for kids in trauma.  She was so happy to receive them.  I told her if any are not any good to give them back and the dog will love it.

I watched a movie on Youtube called "Journey to Shiloh"

Friday I only spent a few hours at the Old State Capitol with our Soldiers Aid Society and then went to Peoria for a gate dedication Springdale Cemetery.
Some of our Metamora dancers were present for the ceremony.
There's a video on the news but you only catch the back of my bonnet.

A young Mr Lincoln presenter.

Saturday I picked up my new, (old because she's 8) rescue pekingese that they called Cammie.  She doesn't know that name so I want to pick a new name that doesn't rhyme with Sophie for confusion. She's about 8 years old and 7 lbs compared to Sophie at 4 1/2 years old and 11 lbs.  She pood and peed in my car but then didn't have much opportunity before we left.  I'm told that in the 2 weeks at PAWS, she only had a cage accident once.  I'm also told she never barked.  She is very shy and doesn't walk on a leash so that means she'll be leashed night and day till she gets used to it.  Besides, if she's hiding in a corner, I'll be able to find her by the leash.  As soon as I got her home, she finished off the food bowl.

I dressed up in a color that would contrast her light color so I chose blue and wore my tiara.  I knew they take adoption photos.
They captioned this on Facebook "Cammy will be treated like a princess".  I stopped by the VFW to show her off.

I didn't want to traumatize her too much but I did give her a bath because she smelled like kennel.
In the evening I helped at the American Legion Hog Roast benefit for honor flight as part of the closing shift.  When I got home, I decided to try the new dog out in the stroller I used for Sophie when I had bending problems after surgery.  It went so-so.  We did make it around the block with Sophie on a leash next to the stroller.
I'm leaning toward renaming her as "Pearl" since she is coming out of her shell and looks like a pearl.

These cards are left in our pews at church for the collection basket.
