San Antonio Public Safety Raiders football team

Soldiers’ Angels is lending its name to the San Antonio Public Safety Raiders football team, making the Raiders the organization's first Veterans Outreach Program Sports Team.

Part of the semi-pro, charity-focused National Public Safety Football League, the local Raiders team currently consists of San Antonio Police and Fire Department personnel, as well as military police, medics and firefighters. The Outreach Program is sponsoring the Raiders to bring more awareness to veterans’ issues and develop future Veteran Public Safety Officers programs while supporting Soldiers’ Angels through funds raised at Raiders football games.

The Raiders were founded last year by retired Staff Sergeant Stacey Corbin Stacey, a US Army veteran and public safety officer from Cleveland, Ohio who was recovering from spinal cord injuries in 2009-2011 at Brooke Army Medical Center (SAMMC). Now known as the San Antonio Raiders Public Safety Football Team, the Raiders have affiliated teams in New York City and Detroit, and plan to have one in every major city in the North America in the near future. To signify their association with Soldiers’ Angels, the San Antonio team’s new name will be Soldiers’ Angels San Antonio Raiders.

To support the Raiders’ expansion, the Raiders are seeking sponsors, volunteers to coach, cheerleaders, and helpers for home games. Players must be active or retired certified police officers, firefighters, paramedics/EMT's, corrections officers or FBI/DEA/ICE (etc.) to be eligible to play. Active-duty military must have their commanding officer’s permission. The 2012 season starts in March in Charlotte, NC and ends in Detroit, MI on June 2, 2012 with a total of six games. I went to Ash Wednesday Mass in the evening after posting the last letter. I did OK on the fasting and abstinence part. I had a cheese stick in the morning, a smoothie after my exercise class, and in the evening I had artificial crab meat in the microwave with a little butter and seasoning. Oh and I had mints throughout the day to refresh. Sure were a lot of people at Mass. Many of us had to work during the daytime services. When I got home I sewed a lace headband with flowers for reenacting. Turned out pretty good. I found a double headband with fabric between 2 wires that I could sew the lace between. Well, I still broke three needles hitting it with the zig zag. Now I’d like to make one in white.

On the way home I stopped off at Family Dollar looking for something but didn’t find what I was looking for. However, I did find Valentine candy hearts for .25 a bag. I got 15 bags for my soldier’s boxes.

Saturday was a busy day, the morning started with a call from a Gold Star mom who told me she was excited about her grandson and a new book about healing.

Then at 10AM I went to a funeral at my local church for the daughter of one of the couples in my Why Catholic discussion group. We get a little bit close in those prayer groups. She died at 54 of cancer.

Then I went to see a movie called Love and Valor at the Springfield Art Association. I really thought that was a great 83 minute film. The movie followed the husband and wife's letters which were so well preserved and the feelings throughout the whole war. Since time was tight, I changed into my ball gown there for the Grierson Gala in Jacksonville. I sent that photo to the maker of my dress and she said she'd put it on her hall of fame. She also made a dress like the Scarlett curtain dress worn by Carol Burnett that someone else worn on her stage/roast.

While watching the Oscars, my son was picking the winner from the nominee based on the most politically correct for the win. He's hitting 'em too.

Monday I had dinner with my sons a Mi Rancho and then headed over to the Hogland center for historical dance practice with the Springfield International Folk Dancers.

On Tuesday I took an hour off of work for the Desert Storm Remembrance ceremony. I was in the American Legion honor guard with post 32 (I’m in Post 759 but 32 for the Legion Riders). While there, I paid my license plate renewal for my Nissan tags.

Sad…Davey Jones from the Monkeys passed away from a heart attack. I used to have a crush on him as a teen. Also those tornados in Missouri and Illinois are in the news.

My sons and I went to Prairie Capital Convention Center to see Cirque Quidam Wednesday evening. We were way up high and brought our binoculars. We all enjoyed the show. Alan was afraid there would be a lot of kids there making noise but it was pretty much adults there.

Thursday I went to the doctor about my sore throat. My culture was negative so I can get away with just cough drops. I then went to an ABATE meeting. I asked that our Italian Dinner tickets be mentioned. I didn’t have any one approach me afterwards to get a ticket. I did get a photo of our trophy that Lincoln Land ABATE won for membership. Our chapter had 98 new members.

Friday I spent my lunch hour honoring USAF veteran, Donald Carlin, for his funeral through a Patriot Guard mission at Camp Butler. Weather was real nice.

I went to an ‘Un-Valentine’ dance at the VFW on Saturday. Wow, what was I thinking that Gene and I could dance with these folks into 5 of 6 lessons? We are learning Fox Trot, Waltz, Rumba, and Swing. Half the time watched in amazement. Although there were a few out there that only did the same dance over and over despite the style/beat. It was still fun. Cha-Cha was the free lesson but is too advanced at this stage. I couldn’t believe how fast the night went since I usually don’t stay up late. The last of the lessons was Tuesday night and improvement was made.

At church we had 3 new servers on their first time and father introduced them as triplets. He also mentioned to keep in our prayers for a couple that wed on Saturday whom I recognized. Sunday after church I went nowhere. In fact I took a nap and even went to bed early. I did cook a great and healthy lunch: carrots, peppers, and turkey ham. However, when I do go to bed early, I usually wake with a headache as was the case. This time I took 2 aspirins and didn’t fight with hoping time will make it go away.

I made an appointment for a mammogram on my day off for Presidents Day. I got a call the next day that I’m fine. I mentioned my day off activities the next day at work and happened to mention how I left the little bead that is placed on my breasts during the exam on till my next shower just for fun. He didn’t get it so I had to bring the little sticker in to show him. I don’t know what I was thinking but if he had to ask his wife she’d just wonder how he’d know about something that intimate. I finished hemming my skirt for my historic ball gown for the upcoming Grierson Galla in Jacksonville this weekend. In the evening I went to the VFW meeting. Bob gave me a check to pass to the Veterans Center from the Order of the Purple Heart to buy bus tokens for veterans which I gave my son who works there.

Wednesday I have exercise class during my lunch so I got Lenten ashes in the evening.

My son told me that his old unit that went to Iraq is being decommissioned. He wants all the shirts from 5/10 marines.

Wednesday I went to our AmVets meeting in Pawnee. As adjutant, I passed out the last minutes and the agenda. Since we had a good turnout, I took a group photo and updated our post website.

I went to a Catholic War Veterans meeting on Thursday. We had our memorial Mass on Sunday at Little Flower. After Mass I went to the Lincoln tomb to observe the wreath laying by the American Legion. The national commander also was there so that was good PR for Springfield.

I celebrated Abraham Lincoln’s birthday by volunteering 3 hrs at the Old State Capitol. There were presentations in Representatives Hall by authors. Free packets of Buckbee’s new tomato seeds named Abraham Lincoln. I hope I’m successful growing these.

Saturday I VFW 755 Honor Guard at the Voice of Democracy Banquet — with Bob Cowles and Gene Walker. The winner gave a nice speech and the contestant from our post took second place. Whoo Hoo!

Tuesday I went to the Womens Overseas Service League meeting during my lunch hour. I had lunch at the American Legion with the Womens Overseas Service League. The waitress staff at the Legion quit (or may have ended a contract) so we ordered lunch thru the bartender. Grace's glass was a double.

This must have been the 5th call I've gotten from Card Holder Services wanting to lower my CC interest rate. I am on the do not call registry. I wish they would stop.

The lunges from my last exercise session did not affect my dancing much. I still feel sore this morning. Arrr
I’m getting better at dancing and getting the rhythm of stepping off with my right foot. My diabetic partner ate before dancing (cookies) and looked better than he did the night before. Unfortunately, my dance partner fell and has a black eye. I haven’t seen him since the accident but spoke on the phone. I guess when I see him on Tuesday I should scream. Ouch!

Alan did clean the house. He said he wanted to finish the bathroom the following day and asked me if I could find time to straighten up my makeup area. I didn’t find that time this morning but I did sew up a hole in his tee shirt. It was not until the weekend that I could remove stuff from drawers and shelves. I then cleaned and used an old toothbrush with furniture polish on the cabinetry to get all the dust and woodwork perked up again.

I went to Walgreens for shoe inserts and I always look at the mark down shelf for things to put in my soldiers boxes. I also look at the flyer for coupons. Spent $90 and was talked into saving $15 by signing up for their rewards card. I have a separate wallet just for discount cards and still get asked constantly to get an ACE rewards card too. All they want to do is track spending habits in exchange for discounts.

This provided the proof that he needed for VA claim that the ship, Chevalier, was on the Saigon River. Wow, so glad to have helped in such a small way. It reminds me of when a network of knowledgeable friends led me to share an economical and efficient way to ship the excess Beanie Babies to Afghanistan that were collected by a Vietnam Veteran as part of his PTSD project. Shipping is so high and they were taking collections for shipping but Don knew someone at Scott AFB that could launder and use them as packing on their pallets at no cost. I took a box of Beanie Babies and put a few in all of my boxes to the troops. So many veterans do not see the point in paying membership dues to veterans organizations but it is a good way to network if they are not receiving those retiree newsletters like I am.

I got tickets for my sons and I to see Cirque du Soleil, Quidam on February 15th.

I had a 4 pack of Ensure nutrition drink in the door of this refrigerator. Yesterday, I had one and gave one to Michael and that accounted for 2 of the 4. This morning there was only one.
Please, I hope whoever took one of my 4 Ensure drinks had a desperate need like diabetic low. If that is the case, you are more than welcome to anything.

I got a new debit card and called to validate the card but again, as in the past 3 years, I needed the last 4 of my SSN which was still coded under my deceased husband’s last 4. I think it won’t happen next year.

While walking my dogs, I stopped to as a neighbor who is a cop in Jerome to ask, "How's Vader?" Vader was a Jerome drug dog and he told me that Jerome had to give that nearly $8K trained dog back to the trainer because he was costing too much. The village of Jerome claimed gas was expensive but the officer stated he drives it either way. He also told me that Pawnee had to give up their donated police dog as well. Hmmm, I wonder how Chatham's police dog is fairing after our American Legion made a contribution to the drug dog?

I was hoping on going to go to the big Operation Iraqi Freedom Homecoming in St Louis on Saturday but the logic of the 1.5 hour drive for ½ hour parade in the cold when I have things to do didn’t make sense. Instead, I got meds from the veterinarian, visited a hospitalized veteran, and take advantage of Big Lots 20% discount day (which a lot are for my soldier’s boxes). So I missed a crowd but the photos and video were online.

This weather is not very January-like. They said snow next week.

I’ve had a lot of holes in the toes of my socks lately. Doesn’t seem to happen with a quality pair but at the same time, that pair seems to get more lint buds all over.

I haven’t put the wrong year in my check book yet. Ha, I use debit cards more.

I noticed a condition on my eye so I called my optometrist office and was told that it would be classified as a medical check rather than optometry and would billed to my Blue Cross HMO. I asked if I needed a referral and was told that most HMOs no longer require a referral but I should check to make sure. So I made an appointment for that afternoon and then called Blue Cross. I was told I did need a referral and that the Dr I had an appointment with was not in the network of providers. So I called my primary care clinic for a referral to a network provider referral. I was told to call Blue Cross back to get a list of the providers in the area. So I called Blue Cross back and was told that there were 2 in the area and one was the Dr whom my appointment was with. So I called my primary clinic back for a referral to Dr JAMES D LOHRBERG. I got an answering machine to the person who creates the referrals. I followed up at noon to learn she was at lunch. I explained that my appointment was at 2:15 and will go to lunch before the appointment and it would be nice to know the referral was done before leaving for lunch enroute to this appointment. I went to see Dr Lohrberg, an eye doctor, and he said I have a common, benign eye condition ~ Pterygium (the p is silent). He said it was common for people who work outdoors. My son pointed out that he saw news about a remake for my favorite show as a teenager ~ Dark Shadows. Johnny Depp is reviving Jonathan Frid’s character as Barnabas Collins. Movie comes out in May so I guess I must go to the opening but how shall I dress? Maybe the enthusiasm of going to Rocky Horror in costume makes me want to go in attire for Dark Shadows too. I’d love to go as Angelique but I’d probably look more like Dr Julia Hoffman now.

Saturday I went to a meeting of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight. I met some real nice people there. I even got a great suggestion for how to hang my “Welcome Home” banner with Velcro at the airport for their return instead of the rolled duct tape I had been using. Once I had old tape that didn’t stick. There was a guest from Litchfield that discussed a new website that they were putting together for their stories from veterans. I looked up the site when I got home. He agreed. I told Len I found out that his granddaughter had passed away. Len told me about her cancer battle. He told me that his kidneys were failing. I was so glad that he had a chance to go to DC on the honor flight when he did before any need for dialysis. I found a good deal at the Salvation Army store for my laptop. It’s a Targus Delux Tote that normally sells for $80 and I got it for $5. I didn’t realize what a good deal I had until I researched its regular price. I wanted a bag that didn’t say, “Steel the bag with the laptop in it” and this looks more like a larger tote only with the partitions for a laptop.

The exercise class on Monday involved some lunges around the room. I didn’t feel it until the next day. Just walking from the parking lot to my work was agonizing. I didn’t even realize that work out in the evening either when I went to Historical dance practice. I understand that since the special historical ball for New Years that the Springfield International Folk dancers practice this Historical dances monthly which alternates with other ethnic dances that they perform. A few of the advanced dances were introduced like the schottische which has a lot of skipping for a higher impact. Vending machines were on another floor so that gave him a needed boost. We also have dance lessons in ball room basics like Foxtrot for 6 weeks on Tuesday.

Monday when I left for work I asked my son to do 2 small tasks, change a light bulb and fix the rubber press-on molding on the sliding door. Neither was done so I changed the bulb but didn’t get to the molding because of dancing. He saw me get the stool to climb up and change the bulb and said he could get the molding later because he’s more of a night person. He announced that he would clean the living room and bathroom on Tuesday. I’ll be home late after dance lesson so he has more time.

I’ve seen this before and after haircut on the internet that I thought would be good for me when I cut my hair. The article was about haircuts that make you look younger.

Our Springfield area is honored again to have another Illinois Dept of Veterans Affairs Veteran of the Month, Terry Vance. His ceremony is Jan 31st.

Tuesday night I got gas since the price was going up and then stopped at the grocers to get a pre-paid card for my son. I also stopped by the Goodwill store to see if a pewter cross necklace was still there that I had resisted getting on Saturday when I had looked around after making my donations. It was still there. While in the checkout line, a lady ahead of me was purchasing the ottoman that I had donated on Saturday for $8.

Wednesday I went to the funeral of a coworker, Andy. He was a member of our American Legion Riders and had riden a CanAm. A mission by the Patriot Guard Riders was provided. 5 motorcycles showed up for that chilly morning ride. During the funeral, I sat in the back for the funeral with Michael and Brian. Brian bawled during the ceremony. They must have been close.

I met a young reservist in a PGR flag line for Andy. He was on leave from Afghanistan. I mentioned that I was writing to a soldier in Afghanistan. He said he was stationed up in the mountains near Baghram. He received a flag that I had signed last August at the Illinois Gathering of the Guard.

That evening, we had an Amvets meeting. We sang happy birthday to my son but insisted that his gift not be opened at the meeting.

Thursday morning we had snow. Leaving my cul-de-sac, I told the neighbor girl to wear a hat and zip up her coat. Then I noticed that there was traffic ahead at the stop sign leading to RT 4 and knew I should take an alternate route. Problem is there was a back up on Iron Bridge Rd as well because of a car in a tree. I took this picture from my car window as I went by. There were other cars on the side of the road as well.
Friday my sons and I celebrated a birthday by going out to eat at Alexander’s Steakhouse right after work because it was on this side of town. We save a few bucks by grilling our own on their open pit. I was so full. Then we went to a movie which I was unprepared for and had a coupon for $5 off the theater ticket so I had to run home and get it. We saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie.
I bought a garment bag at a thrift store for under $10 to keep some of my historic costumes in. I thought I could use it as a pattern to make one for my other dresses too since these plastic garment bags rip. So I looked on ebay to see what I had.

I went to a "WTHeck Were They Thinking After Christmas Gift Exchange" at the Red Lobster. We had a post Christmas gift exchange. I think I came out ahead and brought home some healthy dog treats.

The Catholic War Veterans had a Memorial Mass at the Cathedral on Sunday. Afterward I went to my own church’s pancake breakfast. The proceeds went to the food pantry. I was able to bring home some of the leftover sausage from the breakfast and Alan put it in lasagna. Yum.

I was off for Martin Luther King day and the weather was so nice. So nice that I brought a log in for the fireplace but did not go back to close the door. I forgot about it until I felt the draft. I also noticed a large fly in the house to swat in the Middle of January. The warm weather was good for walking the dogs and putting some things in the garage. While walking the dogs, I saw a motorcyclist coming home. I chatted it up and he had a good ride but pointed to the sky with a front coming through and said I missed the window of opportunity. I explained that my garage faces north and always has a patch of snow to melt longer. I wouldn’t want to roll the bike over that. I swept the rest of the snow and slush off the sidewalk as best that I could. I had the car washed before the next big weather pattern strikes this week.

I went to the VFW Monday night. I had reminded Joan to come since she normally has a conflict on the meeting night. I keep telling them at the post that I’m not the only female member of the post but there are other ladies in our Womens Overseas Service League that are members. Post commander said I was missed last month because they needed a woman’s advice on post décor issues. That’s when I was practicing for the First Night Ball. So they brought up remodeling of the rest rooms. They want to make them more handicap accessible. Well then they wanted to know if taller or shorter stools in the ladies room would be better. Joan said taller and I said shorter. Ha! So much for that.

I learned that one of our Honor Flight veterans has passed away. RIP Gene Owens of Le Roy, IL. Here is his obit:

I got this dress on eBay and await it's arrival. I hope to wear it to the Grierson Ball. Alan had accused my black and red dress as the "Queen of Hearts". Yesterday, the windscreen for my little motorcycle arrived from China. Both of these had no additional shipping charges.

I started a 6 week session of ballroom dance with Gene on Tuesday evenings. I discovered that all that drill and marching can mess up us military gals. We’ve been taught to start with our left foot. In dancing the men start off with their left foot and women mirror this with a right foot start. No wonder I’m such a klutz. I had been a drill leader as an instructor for NCO leadership school and it's unlearning for me.

I had free exercise classes between the holidays. I tried to pay up for the next session last Friday but was turned away because the gal at the desk was clueless. Went back on Tuesday and got it all taken care of. I went to the First Night Civil War Ball at the Old State Capitol. My son called me the Queen of Hearts in sarcasm so now I’d like a new ball dress. The ball was fun, great exercise, and educational. I was proud to be a part of this. Also I was glad that as a volunteer tour guide at the Old State Capitol, I was able to help some of the guest dancers in small ways such as the sound system. I gave away 2 pair of rubber skids for walking on ice thru freecycle last week. I still have a pr for myself. I’ve been cleaning closets. I had no idea how many unmatched socks that I have and I keep wearing socks with holes because those are not shoved in the back. I got a few gifts that you'll say to yourself "It's the thought that counts"I think I'll give away my purple parka. After all, when Alan and I went to Walmart, I asked him on the way out if he saw any of the "people of walmart". He looked at me and said yes. He pointed out that I had a purple coat on with green jeans and a white knit cap New Years morning was the reader at church. The first reader did not show so I did both readings. Later I learned that she had emailed me about 40 minutes before Mass that she was ill. Then when I got to work on Tuesday, she had left a message on my work number that she couldn’t make it. New Years day was so windy that the landscape bricks are blowin' away. I was listening to the radio about City of Springfield's dilemma regarding health insurance for the newly approved civil unions. Then it came to mind that you don't have to be gay to be in a civil union necessarily. Reminded me of the TV show "Three's Company" where Jack, played by John Ritter, was a straight guy pretending to be gay in order to share an apartment with 2 unmarried women. Plot revolved around the charade for the convenience. Monday night I went to the American Legion meeting. We had ham and beans and cornbread. A motorcycle club asked for money for postage for sending boxes of goodies to Afghanistan and read 2 letters of thanks from past boxes. There was a motion made to give more postage money to the motorcycle club. I asked why we (as the Legion) were not doing something like this. I was told that the legion along with the VFW were included in the letters as senders of the boxes. Another vouched for how refreshing it was to receive these boxes from home. I think they misheard my question that I was against sending boxes but I will never be against someone doing the right thing and I vote in favor of the funding. I don’t deny the cause but I’m sure those thank you letters were addressed to the motorcycle club and not the AL or VFW who had a hand in the sending of those boxes. I know that when I was in the military that I remembered kindness. These recipients could be future members of the post with the visibility. The same meeting discussed the shortcomings in our membership. The post reaches in the wrong direction for visibility. I made some oatmeal cookies with rough cut oats and instead of raisins I used crasins. I used low calorie sugar too. My son’s flat screen TV will no longer turn on. When he moved in with me, there was a small TV in the cabinet which he replaced with his TV. I moved that small TV and its cable box to his bed room which he had not slept in since I bought him 2 dressers and a new mattress for the guest bed. He had been sleeping on the couch near his game, Knights of Camelot so he could defend his castle. He slept there last night. My hair is getting long and tangled. It will be cut for ‘Locks of Love’ during Lent. I have an invite to a surprise birthday party for Anita Bedell on Friday. Her husband is good at a straight face but told me he was having a rough time keeping it from her. Dan and Anita were so kind to me when I was laid up by bringing meals and walking my dog.I went to a PGR mission on Dec 29th for a young Iraq war veteran that died in an auto accident. I didn’t take time off but just my lunch hour to honor him in the flag line at Camp Butler National cemetery.

I haven't done too much Christmas shopping but with supporting Alan, a plumber, and furnace repair, and dentist, plus all the busy activities, I look forward to just the movie. Saturday before Christmas, Alan and I went shopping for our food for Christmas dinner. Monday evening I had our last dance practice prior to the New Years historic ball. Tuesday I went to a Chinese buffet after work with some of the friends at the Old State Capitol. There were a number of December birthdays in the group as well as a holiday to celebrate. I was so stuffed. Afterward, I picked up a chicken dinner at the VFW for my son. After my dentist appointment, I volunteered at the OSC on Wednesday after work for the Old State Capitol’s Holiday Walk. The evening was really quite pleasant and there was a long line at the Santa House. We had a special candlelight tour of the Old State Capitol and our resident “Boy in Blue” talked about his life. Many of the shops were open late. The weather was pleasant and people came out. I wore my historic costume. I went to a church discussion group Thurs evening to talk on the topic of Advent. Most of the other sessions were lunch discussions. Dinner was also served. Discussed humility. How Mary said “My soul magnifies the Lord”. Fr Harman told us about how he got his mother a poinsettia every Christmas and always seemed excited every year despite the same (and expected) gift. He said well this year he happened to go to Quincy and picked one up there instead because his schedule was so busy. As a result, she told him, the poinsettia isn’t doing too well. Then here comes the stab, “Where did you get it?” The point was that we criticize things indirectly and point the finger at others. Fr John thanked the kitchen help for the meal and introduced me to a new name for an old dish, funeral potatoes. Christmas eve my furnace quit, again. Brr. I’m till trouble with my furnace that is less than 2 years old. The local guy said I needed a dealer in this model because of warranty on the circuit board. I called the yahoo brothers that installed it for a referral in the model as a distributor. I told my story to Shawn Butler (referral). He's familiar with those Yahoos and has been following their jobs around fixing them. Furnace was repaired on Tuesday after Christmas. Two contact switches were bad. He also insulated and shifted the angle of the pipe in the attic. No extra charge since I paid $250 a week ago. We had difficulty lighting the un-split log to stay warm over Christmas.

Saturday morning I got groceries and supplies for Christmas with my son at Aldi and Walmart. On the way back to the car, I asked if he had seen any of the "PEOPLE OF WALMART". He looked at me funny and I repeated, "you know". He said he was lookin at one. I put my green jeans and purple coat in the Goodwill bag when I got back home. Saturday night I went to Mass with my sons and there was some fantastic singing. Christmas day we opened our presents. Sean loved the scope I gave him for his riffle and was totally surprised. We had ham and lots of trimmings. The kitchen was a busy place. But we ate in the living room because of the cold house. Then went to see the movie “War Horse”. It's been mild so far but that's about to change. It's freezing rain and there was snow on the ground when I got up for work Tuesday which quickly melted by 8AM. Even my outdoor cat came in. Glad I took the dogs for a short walk earlier. The furnace was repaired Tuesday morning. Something about 2 contact switches that were locked up. He also did some insulating around the pipe in the attic. He said he found a cat up there. Must have been my cat, Dave. I started the motorcycles up on Christmas Day after seeing a rider go by in sunny 47 degrees. The Aero started up almost right away but the little one didn't want to start so I had the charger put on. That means the seat has to be removed. Then it quickly fired up. Hardly seems worth it to get all leathered up just to go around the block. But it is good to let it run awhile. Besides my we went to a movie at 3. Alan got some EvoraPet oral care for my dog's bad breath. Funny thing is that his pedigree name is Bentley's Titanium Kiss and his kisses smell real foul. Funny thing happened at work since I also filter our help desk tickets to those that can fix things. A lady in could not access her application and the one that usually handles this was off for the holidays so I sent it to Chuck, the number 2 man. He asked “Has this person ever been able to get into this application? Does this person have the correct rights? Is this a new person?” I called and she said she had gotten into the database on Friday. So Chuck, (who also has her phone number) asks me to call and ask her “what has changed?” Knowing full well I’ll get an answer “I don’t know”. I’m a middle man!!!

I got ‘free mail’ from a lady soldier through the Soldiers Angels Ladies of Liberty Team that I sent a box to on Nov 17th. Whoo Hooo!

Tuesday night I stopped by the Apple shop (not an Apple store since the nearest is in St Louis) to ask about a cable that came with my new laptop. Seems it was more like an extension cord that goes into my existing charger. I have to remove a part to plug that extension cord in so all I can see is a risk of losing that part. I stopped by the VFW, not to pick up my usual chicken dinner but to drop off some pictures that I ordered via Snap fish of the Purple Heart Viola Day fundraiser. I also discussed with Bob about the group for our post that I started on MyVFW.org. I was so exhausted that I crashed in bed by 8PM and got up at 6. My YMCA lunch time exercise sessions have been free these 2 holiday weeks.Alan has a potential interview for a human resource job in Danville, IL at the Veterans Administration.

I found a real nice dressy dress for next year’s committee party at the Hilton for only $5 at the Goodwill store. It’s just a little low cut so I got a piece for that. Also found a nice pair of shoes for dancing because the pair I had were too tight despite the correct size.

I had a luncheon with the Womens Overseas Service League on Tuesday. I got a nice Christmas Cactus and a blueberry loaf. My busy schedule doesn’t give me time to bake.

I left work early to go to the dentist Tuesday afternoon and still have a swollen cheek. In fact, it’s bruised. Since I didn’t have to go back to work, I did my Christmas shopping at Subway. I put gift cards in my Christmas cards. Then I went to the post office to mail a box to my soldier in Afghanistan and had the clerk supplement my old stamps for postage on my Christmas cards. I shopped at Walmart for dog food and wine and came back with a lot more than I shopped for. Alan called and wanted a chicken dinner from the VFW. It was near closing but I got it. I learned that a valued member of our post had passed away the night before and that his funeral would be on Friday. I couldn’t make the funeral since I went to Chicago. During the day, I had a plumber fix my leak so all in all an expensive day.

Wednesday evening we had our AmVets Post 61 Christmas party and we celebrated with dinner at Lonestar. We had a nice turnout but then who wouldn’t show up for a free meal. I sold some 50/50 tickets and the commander’s wife won. Then our post commander gave a few words for Christmas. My sons were also there.

Friday morning I got up early to catch the Amtrak to Chicago for the Veteran of the Month Ceremony. Jack Amberg was the December VoM and after his ceremony/speech, he changed sides of the stage to join the ‘Class of 2011’ Veterans of the month. There was a blind man getting on the train in Springfield and I permitted him to touch my back as I went to the train. As we approached the steps, I pointed him out to one of the conductors to help seat him. As the doors on the train closed, I heard a man complain that he wanted off. The conductor told him he should have never gotten on and the next stop was Lincoln. So there were a couple of stowaways on board. These stops are short and he should never have gone up the steps. I had some time to kill so I walked to the lake shore, watched the skaters in the park and had lunch. It was difficult to find the Pritzker Military Library since there was no sign on front. The auditorium was fancy but moderate in size. The Governor was to be there but he got called away. If it was a plane, well, same thing except that those tickets are checked before boarding. It was dark riding back on the train. I wasn’t sure what to wear know that I’d be among veterans wearing their service caps. I decided on wearing my red blazer with pins since it was a “Wear Red Friday”. There was another lady wearing red but she didn’t know about the meaning. She learned something that Friday that she promised to repeat. I did a lot of walking in Chicago. I also wore uncomfortable shoes. I had heel boots thinking that the governor would be there but he could not make it last minute. Some houses that had back yards facing the tracks had put up Christmas lights on their back decks for us riding the train.

Saturday morning I slept in after a long day in Chicago and dancing late the night before. I did a little laundry and then I went to the Old State Capitol for our Historical dance dress rehearsal. This was the first debut in my black and red dress and new hoop. I noticed that I had sewn (shortened) the dress between the ruffles but I had pinned a section under the ruffle and not sewn it as a test for length. I gave another dancer, Deb, my old hoop since she needed one and was getting by on a single boned hoop. I told her it was a nice flounced hoop and used but I trip on it. The new hoop I got was made for petite women. It had just arrived in the mail the day before.

After our practice, I learned that there was a special historic holiday house tour and I had time to make the last stop on the list at Edwards Place. There was Lincoln, Civil War soldiers and civilians as well as carolers. There was a reception afterward at the Pasfield house which is rarely open to the public so I went for a short while to see the inside. Summers I walk past that house and had been curious about it. It is rented for parties and B&B.

I did the readings at Mass. The second reader didn’t show up so I did both. I had to carry the book up in procession so I left my purse in the pew and asked the guy in front of me to watch it. He and his wife chuckled because he’s blind. She said she’d make sure he kept an eye on it. After weeks of being cold in the house, Sunday morning after church, I called Mike come look at my furnace. I need a part on my one year old furnace. The furnace is receiving power but not putting out 25 amps. That's why I'm cold. Sure it 55 in the house and only 34 outside but feels better in the sun.

I woke Wednesday morning to a cold house. It was 61 and my dog and cat were on the foot of the bed which they normally don’t do. Well, I did wash Marley’s sleep mat and it was still in the dryer.I saw a kid going to the bus stop in a pink blanket. Don’t they have coats or did they get out of one bed and just transporting to school “as is”? Had to start the car and get the first good frost off.

Wednesday I had a one-on-one lesson about our help desk work requests.
Thursday I went to a seminar on “Countdown to Retirement”. Friday, my Christmas present to myself came. I got a new Apple MacBook Pro.

·After the parade, I went home to change into my suit jacket and put on my AmVets cap and then went to a Christmas Memorial at the Vietnam Memorial. I've been going to this for the last say 4 years. Weather was much nicer than in the past when it was so cold we couldn't wait for the ceremony to end so we could get out of the cold. There was a protester with a megaphone that was subdued by the Leathernecks.

In the evening I changed into my historic costume and went to the 1850s choir at the Westminster Presbyterian of Lincolns. Travel back to the 1850s this Christmas season—join Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln for special music, worship, and a carol sing. The Rev. Dr. Clifford J. Hayeswill portray the Rev. Dr. James Smith, who was pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1849 - 1856. Dr. Smith officiated at the funeral for Eddie Lincoln.

Sunday I went to Mass with the Catholic War Veterans at St Jude’s in Rochester. Sunday was much colder than Saturday so I didn’t really go out. My sons and I had tacos.The Lincolns, portrayed by Fritz Klein and Pam Brown, will greet visitors — and everyone is invited to attend in mid-19th century attire along with our performers. I got Amtrack tickets for Dec 16th to Chicago for the Veteran of the Month ceremony for 2011.

Monday I had my exercise session during lunch. After work, I went to a Patriot Guard Riders mission locally for Ron Williams. I picked up a memorial card. After standing in a flag line from 5:15 go 6:45PM, I then went over to the Hoogland Center for the Arts for our Historic Ball dance practice for First Night. This time we practiced in semi-dress with hoops for the feeling of the swag. It was something like a train wreck. Somehow, our gender roles got swapped while changing partners. The show must go on.

I had lunch with a coworker at a Chinese buffet. Here’s his fortune. We experienced our first snow flurries for the season here in central IL.

I went to ABATE meeting on Thursday. I tried Miller Lite 64 calories. Not bad so I picked up a case.

I mailed a box to a lady in Afghanistan on Friday.

My son asked me to wake him up Friday before I go to work so he can take his car over for maintenance all day troubleshooting. The garage said they would give him a ride back. I woke him twice before I left for work at 8:00. I called him 4 times leaving voice messages. Then called Rugless Auto to see if he had arrived and they said “no”. How’s he ever gonna get a job? He called me about 2:25PM and told me he’s been up since 11 but he thought it was too late to take his car in and feared he’d have to leave it there for the weekend. Whatever!

I got an email Open Range, my internet service provider, that they were discontinuing its nationwide operations and by evening I was cut off. I’ve been having such rotten luck. My HP computer crashed in September and I had trouble getting a refund of the new hard drive much less acknowledgement of the extended service pack. As a result I’ve been getting by on my husband’s Macintosh. I needed a PC tower for the non-compatible Apple stuff and Internet Service so went to BLH and got a refurbished Dell and Xandadoo. Xandadoo is so slow that I don’t think I’ll continue its 7 day trial. My son needs internet for his Kingdom of Camelot. On the up side, I got an email the HP was finally refunding the cost of the hard drive that did not work and I had returned since I wrote and sent a copy of the postal insurance label. Tuesday I went to the cable company and got in on an introductory internet offer so I’ll cut off Xanadoo.

I rented a movie from Family Video and noticed they had a special display table for videos for the troops. I made a contribution at the checkout. The clerk asked me to sign the card for their wall. I pulled out a Soldiers Angles card and told him to staple my card to their card. I watched Water For Elephants with my son.

Saturday morning I got up early and did some grocery shopping. I had some coupons at County Market to use up before Sunday. Items were greatly discounted but mostly things that I don’t use. However, I got them and took three bags over to the Food Pantry.

I stopped by the Avenue Thrift store and picked up this double Lane recliner. It had stuffing coming out on the top right but I patched it and you can hardly tell. It is so comfortable and nice for a lap dog. The recliner did not fit in my Murano by just a little bit so my son and I had to borrow a pick up to bring it home. I found a matching pillow with a yellow tag (the half off color at the time) and a tapestry with a yellow tag that complimented this. That should stretch the life of the chair especially with pets.

Sunday after church I went to the Kumler Church where ABATE was hosting the annual Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless. Time are tough and even our motorcycle poker runs had trouble raising money and donations for silent auctions but organizers got plenty of donations for this dinner. Kudos. One of the first in the meal line was my cleaning lady, Margret. It was nice to see her. I told her I’d been helping with the dinner the last 3 years and she didn’t remember seeing me last year. I thought for a moment and then realized that was the year of my accident. However, I did take pictures of the Thanksgiving dinner so I know I was there but probably was seated more.

When I got to work on Monday, I learned that a coworker’s father had passed away. His mother had passed in May. How sad. I've been having everyone sign a card and accepting donations for the charity mentioned in the obit.

In the evening I continued my lessons for the historic ball that’s coming up. These are really more like social mixer dances because we change partners frequently but I would not go without a partner because some of the women have to dance in the male position. I can’t do that so well with my height because we have to create a high bridge at time for others to go under and stuff like that. I’ve been going with Gene from the VFW. He seems to be enjoying the lessons. He said he really liked the movie “Of Gods and Generals”. I loaned him an outfit for the event from my collection of historic costumes but warned him that it’s not a general but a sergeant outfit.
I got a letter in the mail from one of the ladies that I had sent a box of goodies to in Afghanistan thanking me for the package. I’ve also been watching the facebook reunion of my previously adopted soldier on his return to his family.

It rained on Tuesday so I didn’t get to walk my dogs. I did see someone riding a motorcycle in the rain.

I took a ½ day off on Tuesday and all day Wednesday to ride to Pekin, IL for a PGR mission for KIA LCpl Jordan Bastean. Weather this time of year gets real iffy for riding but the plan worked well. Mornings and evenings are too cold but mid-day is fine. The way things worked out, I went the 70 miles in the afternoon for the visitation, stayed the night with the Kerby’s, and rode back Wednesday afternoon after the funeral. He was only the second burial at the new Prairie Haven Cemetery in Pekin. The city could not have done a better job at honouring this 19 year old that died for our country. The people on the streets stood there as we went by and their emotion was contagious. A floral shop had employees at the side of the road with blue and white shoe boxes which I presumed they held flowers to be thrown on the hearse. I later learned they were white doves.
There was a little girl in our flag line with full leathers and red sunglasses. I told her I had red sunglasses and then put them on to show her we looked alike. She was a real show stopper. The procession of motorcycles was real slow and difficulty standing up without an occasional foot down. I saw the lady ahead of me periodically shaking her sore clutch hand. It was hard but it didn’t kill me. It was a bit windy on the ride home but doable.

On my way home, I had a cell phone message from IL DVA about a ceremony in Chicago at the Pritzker Military Library on Dec 16, 2011 for all the Veterans of the Month for 2011.

Wednesday evening we had a meeting of the American Legion Riders. We discussed our POW Missing man table, Wreaths Across America, and food drive during the Christmas parade.

Saturday I didn’t feel well. I had belly cramps so I was in pain. I didn’t get too much done but I managed to take down the Halloween decorations. Sunday I got the leaves raked and bagged for pick up this week’s pick up.

I picked up a bunch of 1/2 off Halloween candy for the soldiers' boxes at Walgreens. I left one bag in the stores' own drop off for the local guard too.

Alan yelled "BOO" and made me scream --- again. I got to be careful to make that SMACK playful. After all he does have PTSD and you should see me snatch the remote from his sleeping hand.

My sister in Wisconsin reported seeing a bald eagle on a tree outside her window. That’s cool.

Sunday I treated my sons to Annual Mostaccioli Dinner at church.

Monday I went to an American Legion meeting. I brought up the fact that military retirees will get the Jan COLA on Dec 31^st thereby making 13 pay periods for tax purposes.

Now I’m putting together plans for Veterans Day. There’s an annual ceremony by the mayor honoring veterans on Thursday followed by the Catholic War Veterans meeting. Friday there’s a ceremony in the Chatham Square at 11. Then there is a free meal at Applebees for veterans.

Looks like things will get busy again with the Rocky Horror Show coming.

Monday night I went to a VFW meeting. I laid info on the podium for the commander to tell about Wreaths Across America and Honor Flight fund raiser. The post voted to donate $60 towards wreaths and an individual slipped me an extra $20 on the side.

I resumed my Monday and Friday exercise class after taking a hiatus session while on vacation.
My office is right above the parking garage. I park out in the lot but the garage below was closed on Monday for major repairs. I’m wearing my headphones that I use on the firing range.

Monday and Tuesday we got a much needed rain and yet I still haven’t had frost on my cana and tomatoes.

Somehow, I do not trust drivers in front of me that have not checked their out tail light(s) to have checked their brakes either. Especially when the roads are wet.

Tuesday my cleaning angels did my house and it was nice to come home to a fresh smelling home. Normally they come on Friday. I picked up some chicken at the VFW in a to-go box. I pinched my fingers on the tongs and was bleeding. After giving my son his dinner, I went off to my Catholic group. I came home and watched Sons of Anarchy and during a commercial I remembered to pull my camera out of my purse to charge the battery. I couldn’t find my charger and went nuts. Went to bed angry and woke up and found my charger. I’m so sorry.

I put together a crock pot of beans for supper. Tuesday I got a new water meter in my crawl space and the man that changed it told my son there’s a pipe leak and I’ll need a plumber. Well I also need some work on my sink too.After work on Thursday there was a frost warning so I frantically picked the rest of my tomatoes. I did so till the wound on my finger broke open and bled. You see, I pinched my finger on the tongs at the VFW chicken dinner and the band aid doesn’t stay on the tip that well so it came off. My son helped after that. I’m fixing fried green tomatoes.· ·

Thursday evening I went to ABATE. After the meeting I went to the Haunting of Edwards Place where the theme this year is about the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. There was a horror bride, funeral embalming with a widow crying the name of ‘My Billy’, Mary Lincoln's séance for Wily, Dining Room with a General and his wife over a table of body parts including a head centerpiece of "Jeanie", a Navy sea captain that lost his arm and was looking for it (then a hand came out from under the bed and grabbed my leg), and a surgeon doing an amputation. ·

Saturday I put Sea Foam in the tank in case this day is the end of riding season. I got 67 MPG on that last tank. I'm a great cook today. I fixed schnitzel and sauerkraut noodles. Yum. I picked up some crescent shaped bricks to finish off the flower garden in my front yard. I had to pull up the wood fence that was rotted out and plastic edger. The garden seemed incomplete without edging. I had some crescent bricks but not enough. It looks much better. I also got “free mail” from Afghanistan thanking me for a box that I had sent.

Sunday morning I saw a little humming bird by my cana. I thought that their migration season had passed. I read the 1st reading at Mass. There was a little girl who came to communion with her mother and got a blessing. She smiled and pranced in a circle after the blessing. In the afternoon I went to the ABATE toy run to contact ministries. I took this picture of a dead lawn flamingo down the block as part of a Halloween decoration filled the tank on the little bike.

My son’s birthday is Wednesday so we’ll be going out to eat.

Veteran Kelli Harmon knows what the support of Soldiersí Angels means to troops and their families, so she jumped at the chance to join the team in September. Kelli is the Soldiersí Angels Social Media Coordinator, a position in which she will focus on spreading the message of Soldiersí Angels through mediums like Facebook, Twitter and other online avenues.

Soldiersí Angels and Kelli have been partners for several years already. She initially encountered the organization in 2008 when Toby Nunn stopped in at the Fort Hood BOSS (Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers) office while she was the BOSS President for Ft Hood. As a previous Fort Hood BOSS President himself, Toby was interested in supporting Kelliís efforts in the position. Toby and Kelli worked together on a number of large-scale events that Soldiersí Angels supported. ìDuring my two years as BOSS President, Soldiersí Angels was the most supportive organization and they truly showed that they do care about Soldiers,î Kelli recalls.

In April 2010, Kelli was deployed to Camp Marmal, in Regional Command-North, Afghanistan with the 4th Infantry Division, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade and soon became the Brigadeís BOSS Representative. The Camp had no morale facilities when she arrived, so she set to work gathering resources to change that, including Soldiersí Angels. Her efforts brought about MWR opportunities that included a gym, USO facility, basketball and volleyball courts, a movie theatre and a number of special events. Kelliís tremendous work during her deployment garnered her two Army Commendation Medals and a Bronze Star.

Giving back to those around her has always been a part of Kelliís life. Before spending 6.5 years in the military, she chose a career as a firefighter before discovering that she felt as though she still was not contributing enough to her country. ìI loved it and will go back at some point,î she says, ìbut I wasnít giving back enough as a firefighter.î

With her background and experience, working with Soldiersí Angels after her military service was a natural fit. ìThe dedication of Soldiersí Angels to the average Soldier and Veteran led me to choose Soldiersí Angels as my next place of employment,î Kelli says. ìIím really excited to be working with Soldiersí Angels.î

My Week/My Trip to Ireland

I just returnedfrom my wonderful trip to Ireland. It’s amazing how much our Irish immigrants to America had influenced ourAmerican culture in their music, dance and values for freedom and landownership.

A group of about30 something left by bus from the church parking lot to catch our plane in StLouis. I was surprised to stillsee the airport boarded up since the April tornado had struck the airport.

The other halfof the group left from Chicago and was supposed to meet with us for the flightin Newark to Ireland. They didn’tmake it till the following day with many difficulties along the way.

Once we arrivedin Shannon, we were met by our bus driver and guide, William. He dropped us off at our Bed andBreakfast house. There were 2houses we were split among. Later he took us to Moriarty's for shopping. Nothing there that I needed. William warned us that we’d have to goin the bushes to use the toilet but actually the entrances were in the hedge. They hosted us with Irish Coffee (notstrong at all kind)

Saturday we hadMass at the “Prince of Peace” Fossa Church which was built in 1970. The cross was outside of the churchthrough a glass window with the mountains behind. We toured MollsGap and Black Valley. At the giftshop I fell for a cute umbrella by LisbethDahl but resisted because it was made in China.

There were no words spoken at the apparition but Mary’smessage has always been fasting and prayers and the Irish already knew hungerso her message was prayer. We drove to seethe Cliffs of Mohr but the weather got rough and the authorities were callingpeople back when we got there. Wind gusts were up to 140MPH and there is no insurance payout ifinjured. She got up at 6AM andthen woke me at 7AM so I could shower. Even with a lead on time, I would be ready for 8AM breakfast beforeher. Once she walked out of theroom dragging hose from her shoe and once she left powder footprints on thecarpet. It’s a good thing she hada room mate. On the plane she waswatching a movie with the ear phones and laughing so much that she was makingthe rest of us laugh. I don’tthink she realized it with those ear phones. HA!

Ah yes, over 400emails in my Yahoo, not counting gmail and hotmail.

Got up at 4AM onSaturday which is not bad. I rodethe little motorcycle downtown to the Route 66 Festival. I walked around and looked at thecars. Got a little hungry and hadsome chili. Stopped briefly in theOld State Capitol which was good because I realized I have tour guide duty nextSaturday. I fixed a batch ofzucchini that I had in the fridge from before I left that need to be used up.

It’s hard to believe that a priority mail box makes it to the troops faster than first class letters. Wow.

My son gave me a delayed birthday gift – a special bottle of wine with a motorcycle on it.

I renewed my driver’s license for my birthday. I think it was an improvement on my last photo.

Friday I left my cell phone on my desk at work. I really felt naked without it. I guess I’m getting prepared to go cold turkey without it while on vacation. After work I went to the opening ceremony for the Illinois Gathering of the Guard at the state fairgrounds. I stayed until about 8:30 and I was getting tired. Saturday morning I went to the bank to see if my Euros were there. They were not in the safe so I went back for the PGR meetings. Col Tony Libri was among the guest speakers. After his speech, Tony Libri received the Legion of Merit, in part, for his National Guard work helping to bolster the Afghan National Police in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Since Saturday afternoon with the Gathering was mostly local rides to the memorials that were nothing new to me, I focused more on my out-0f-town friends, the Red Knights. I had dinner with them at their fundraiser at the Route 66 hotel. They had auctioned off 3 special helmets.

I dropped my 30 plus flags off about 7AM at the Sangamon Co Reception Center but Less and Pat had to put them up because I needed to run off and get on my motorcycle to meet my fellow Red Knights at 8:15 to head off to Halls Harley Davidson for the Ride to Remember to the IL State Capitol's memorial. It's the only memorial on the grounds and not funded by the state. The weather was perfect. In the past I recall heat stroke like weather and 2 years ago there was a monsoon like weather that called it off. Hopefully you can hear the podcast for this event at:

I find it odd that our local tabloid radio station that had commentaries about 911 going overboard and used politically would share such a wonderful ceremony. Perhaps it was to ire their listeners.

After the Ride To Remember, the club was going to eat but at a restaurant I was unfamiliar with so I missed it. All was well because my sons had made Papa John’s Pizza. I was hungry. So I switched my vest from the Red Knights MC to the American Legion Riders vest. I needed to be there by 1 PM for the 2PM ceremony so we could practice. We practiced the posting of colors and the 21 gun salute. The honor guard was made up of members of the American Legion, VFW, Chatham police and Chatham firefighters. The posting of colors went well. I had hoped to be in the middle of the firing line up so I could watch others out of the corner of my eye. They said we were to line up by height. While waiting for the 21 gun salute, our police officer was called to duty regarding a potential suicide call. Another veteran was quickly put in his place. Let’s put it this way, our post has been losing a lot of members (well it was also a guard weekend) and they have to be pretty desperate to put me in there. It was not a bad one to cut my teeth on because the audience was indoors and would not notice if we fired together. Now it'll be a diff story Veterans/Memorial Day on the Square. After the ceremony, we set loose about 400 red white and blue balloons. I did this side by side with Bret and Jerry, our local gold star parents. He wrote a name on the balloon he released so I grabbed a pen and wrote my husband’s name on my balloon. Before we released our balloons, we all said “Let there be peace on Earth and Let it begin with me”. After the ceremony, I rode the motorcycle home to trade for my SUV to pick up the flags. I convinced my 2 sons to take a break from football and to come and give me a hand with the flags. Bret and Jerry insisted on helping me roll up the flags and pick up the stakes. That was more than kind but they wanted to do that. Les, who, was picking up the Springfield rifles had the sacks that I use to store my flags in. He brought them from across the parking lot. When he approached me, he saluted. I felt so humbled but instinctively I returned the salute. Les has done so much for our veterans as have I so he recognized the mutual respect.

I shall leave the flags in the car for the following 2 days since I will be taking them to the Honor Flight Homecoming on Tuesday night.
I told the news camera man not to video me because it was my first time firing for the 21 gun salute (at 1:05 on the timer). I hoped he just focused on our bugler.

I feel that the media misses our local WW2 female veteran, Jean Goretski, and now focusing on me. I wish Les go the attention. Maybe if we got him to lose some of that belly.

That evening, I was sewing up the edge on the flag that flew on my bike while watching news about 911 tributes in NYC. How meaningful these two went together.

So my brother calls me Monday night to ask me for help (long distance) on how to change his password in Yahoo because his account sent out a spam message. This isn’t easy when I can’t be there over his shoulder. Well I get him to a certain point in the process where he's asking me "who his favorite author is". My help has ended. I told him to click on the live help (which is off at the time) later.

I saw such a full moon at the end of my cul-de-sac while walking the dogs.

I’ve went to the annual Rocky Horror Picture Show at Southern Illinois University @ Edwardsville on Aug 20th. Last year I missed it because of my accident. We had a blast and there were many first timers to the show (AKA Virgins). The host gave me a nice SIUE hoodie for helping MC the event. Photos here:

After the duty helping at the Old State Capitol, I went to Lincoln, IL for the Balloon Festival. A member of the Vet Center had invited a bunch of friends to a back yard BBQ so we got to see both. We carpooled to see the evening Balloon Glow and got real close.

Well, we had a hot day followed by a cold day. I had opened the windows and turned on the air evac system which blew out the pilot on the water heater. I had a nice luke warm shower.

Springfield sets record ~ Thursday was the hottest Sept. 1 on record in the city of Springfield The temperature hit 102 at 2:41 p.m. Thursday. The old record was 101 in 1984.

Tuesday I missed my coworker’s after-hours retirement get together because I had promised over a month ago that I’d be cashier for the VFW Chicken Dinner. I did inherit her stand-up computer desk.

Thursday evening I washed the dust off my car. Friday morning the birds left a deposit. I wiped it off regretfully.

It looks like I’ll partake in this through the American Legion: The 911 Community Day of Remembrance Committee finalized plans for 11 September 2011.
The program will be at Sangamon Prairie Reception Center, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL 62629 from 2-4 pm. The actual event will be about 30 minutes.

Friday after work, I stopped by to watch the flat track amateur races over at the fairgrounds. I watched from the fence because I didn’t want to pay $10 admission.

Saturday morning I loaded up my car for my trip but before leaving, I met my son, Cheryl (the retiree mentioned above) and Stephanie (a cousin to a KIA) and we lined Veteran’s Pkwy with our flags for the arrival procession of KIA Sgt Andrew Tobin. I saluted as the hearse, family and motorcycles passed by. Afterward I left for the Quad Cities to spend a weekend with my sister.

Since my sister had to work a half day, I knew she’d meet up later. I had a nice drive until I got to the Quad Cities. There was a bad storm. I got there a little early so I stopped to see Hero Street in Silvis, IL. I climbed the hill to the Grotto in between the storms. However, I did step in some bad mud and ruined my shoes and socks. I later bought some new socks and even found some soft shoes for my upcoming trip to Ireland. I’m sure walking shoes will come in handy. Well, my sister and I met up at the hotel and were getting hungry. We called and got a reservation at Circa 21 dinner/play house to see “Nana’s Naughty Nickers”. Really a quaint old theater house on Rock Island. I wouldn’t mind going back for some of their other shows. We shared a bottle of Pino.

Sunday morning we had breakfast at Cracker Barrel where we met with Patty’s grandkids. Courtney has 2 sets of twins and they behave well. Really, she has to be an organized mom for something like that. Patty gave a pumpkin from her garden to the kids and me.

After breakfast we went to the Buffalo Bill Cody homestead. There were buffalo there of course. We toured the house. Then we followed the signs to a pioneer village. On the way we stopped at McCausland, IA to watch a neat game between firefighters spraying a barrel that was tethered between two trucks. That was pretty cool and timely along the way. Afterward, we continued to the pioneer village and there too was a special event for the weekend with reenactors and a festival atmosphere. How cool is that to stumble upon?

We had dinner at a sushi bar before going to the Imax Theater to see Pirates of the Caribbean in 3D. I’d never been to a movie with 3d glasses. Actually didn’t imagine mermaids to be the evil ones either.

Monday morning we did a little shopping before lunch at McDonalds and headed our separate ways.

My sister rides a scooter. She explained that it was easier and less time consuming to get to work that way. I asked her to explain. She said it’s the storage she can just throw her purse and stuff under the seat, throw on a helmet and go. No need to worry about boots and chaps or dual saddle bags to belt up half her goodies on both sides.

Tuesday I had numerous birthday wishes on my facebook page In fact is was so cool to post a wish on one of my former Soldiers that I had adopted thru Soldiers Angels who shared the same birthday. . I sent a box to one of our lady soldiers after work. A man at the next window thought I should get postage for half off because it was my birthday (still have the birthday ribbon on). I had a wonderful birthday with my sons. We went to O’Charlie’s. I had a steak and shrimp combo. I got a free desert for my birthday (I work a pin that said today is my birthday). The caramel pie was yucky. Afteward, my son and I went to stock up at Meijer for things like dog food while I go on my trip to Ireland. When I got home, I checked a few emails and the internet was slow. Since I was tired, I went to bed. I totally forgot to watch the new episode of Sons of Anarchy.

Multiple fires have been raging across Texas, burning over 1,000 homes and 100,000 acres in the last few days alone. With the state's huge military population, that means many active duty personnel and veterans and their families have been displaced right along with everyone else, and many have lost everything they have. Even some of those whose homes have survived probably will not be able to return for several weeks.

Donations of funds for Soldiers' Angels to purchase items for these heroes and their families are desperately needed, as well as gift cards, and materials such as clothing and hygiene items or other things that a displaced person would need. Gift cards are needed as well.

Entrepreneur Mia Styles is helping Soldiers’ Angels stuff care packages with her one-of-a-kind, delicious beef jerky. If only I compared my stress level this week to that of a soldier in Afghanistan during the heated summer uprisings! Monday I threw papers because of the stress. 1) car had to go to the mechanic for the check engine soon light (turned out to be a loose gas cap) 2) stupid telephone call at work 3) trouble signing up for the payroll deduction of parking fees 4) had to drop the dogs off at the groomers for an appointment and the address was wrong on the gift certificate. 5) I got a call to pick up the dogs so he could make a 2:30 appointment and my son thought he’d get gas first. YIKES!

I found a screw in my tire at the post office while shipping 2 boxes to the troops. Funny that I just had my brake pads checked the day before. Hmmm! could I have picked it up at the garage? Wednesday I went to a tire dealer to remove a screw and ended up getting all 4 new tires. Not only was there a screw in one tire, there was slow leak in another, and a dangerous slash in another. All had low tread in the yellow zone of his measuring device.

Monday evening I missed the VFW meeting because I was stuck on the phone with Hewlett Packard support. It’s the hard drive going out. I ran a back up to my external drive. I have an extended service pack on the computer but the fellow in India said there was no record of it in his database. So after placing the order for a new hard drive, I was transferred to someone who could fix their records. Meanwhile he said he’d call same time the following day. Ah! I spoke to an American. How do I explain to her that the folks in India don’t have my care pack in their database without being too ethnic?

Tuesday after work I picked up some chicken dinners for my son and myself at the VFW under the pressure of knowing I may have to be home in time for and important call from India on my HP computer’s hard drive problem. I made it in time for the call.

On the way to work, I travel the new MacArthur Blvd extension between Springfield and the interstate which is lightly populated. There’s a cop that sits at an intersection to nowhere because they may want to make a road there in the future. It’s a 35MPH zone and just fields that people commute in a hurry on. That’s easy revenue in speeding tickets. Meanwhile there are thieves steeling copper to recycle from the air conditioners of homes and businesses that the thieves get a few bucks for but the owners have to pay 20 times to have repaired after the vandals.

A dear coworker announced that she’ll be retiring in 2 weeks and moving to S Carolina after selling her house. Wow, it was a surprise. She said she needed to be near her mom. She plans to go to culinary school. I asked to have her stand up workstation. Looks like I’ll be picking up some more duties too.

The tomatoes in the garden are flourishing now. They seem smaller because of the lack of July water and heat.
Thursday I skipped an ABATE meeting to go to a lecture at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential museum on the 1st Battle of Bull Run. It was very interesting comparison between the advantages/disadvantages between the N and S. Especially bad was the gray uniforms worn by Wisconsin regiments and friendly fire. They got hit twice when they retreated. Duh! The egos of the leadership played a factor in how they followed directions as well. The S had better discipline but the N had better resources.

Friday I took a half day off of work to nap for a late night of volunteer work at the state fair beer tent. I didn’t get much rest however. I did learn that during the day shift, Bill Peters, signed in for duty and collapsed and died. It was hot and a good walk from the parking area. Mr Peters was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and leader of the Interveterans Council. We had a moment of silence for him at our briefing for the evening shift. I ended up in the Miller tent. We had a good youthful band from Chicago play. They even played the latest from Lady GaGa. After I got off duty at midnight, I went quickly to a little theater showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s an old theater that had recently reopened and has known ghosts that haunt the place. Needless to say I got home late and had to get up at 6AM to help with the Run for the Fallen at Washington Park. Both of my sons were involved as well. My son that works at the vet center was at the starting point and registration. My other son and I manned a water table at the 1 mile mark. It was wonderful to see the first runners come by in their camo tee shirts that were issued for the run. Then, to my surprise, came the walkers who were gold star families carrying flags. As they went by I clapped in an encouraging way and was moved to tears. Now I see why the event was not publicized much. It was intended to be intimate for the local gold star families, many whom I’ve met at many of the veteran events that I attend. That evening, I recalled the day’s run with tears. I now understand why the publicity was limited to veterans organizations. The run was set up at the pavilion on Palmatier Road, named after KIA Jacob Palmatier. His wife walked this event.

Sunday morning I rode my little motorcycle to church. I was the second reader. In the evening I went to the Muni to see a play of the Wizard of Oz. It was a great show and singing. I saw my coworker, Dave and his family get a golf cart trolley drop off from the parking lot to the front row area. At intermission I had a small visit.

There’s a gentleman that may be interested in buying my Piaggio MP3 400 that I have advertised. He just wanted to call on Tuesday to see if the warranty will be honored. Crossing my fingers.

Monday evening I took Bentley to the vet for a follow up. He had a little cist that I had the doctor look at. She needled it and out came water. No big deal except for the money part.

Ok, so I tried some chocolate covered bacon leftover from the state fair that was brought to work. Not bad.

My Week

I saw a mini-pin at the farmers market that got a lil aggressive. The owner stepped in. He noticed my AmVets cap. He told me he was home from a trauma hospital after his brain injury while in the 82d Airborne. I gave him SA thank you card from my purse. He said he lost his wife a week ago from a diabetic attack and that the mini-pin was her dog. The dog cuddled him and was calm.

Well now we’ve been told that employees have to pay to park. An extra $35/month will eat into that new $39.44 pay raise I just got on July 1.

Although I have not been riding my motorcycle to work lately, I did take the Yamaha to work on Thursday because it’s easy to park at the state fair after work. Friday my dog had his stitches taken out. In the evening I worked in the beer tent at the state fair with the proceeds going to veterans.

I rode my little motorcycle to work knowing that I could cheat park at the state fair on opening night for the opening Twilight Parade. After work, I went to a presentation over at the hospital conference room and got a complimentary screening for cholesterol. It was 226. Then I went to the parade. Yep, traffic was heavy and so I rode between a few barriers right down the parade’s staging area. Before getting into the parade area, I had to rejoin the traffic but ziggied my way along the curb till I got to the fair grounds. I had to be real defensive doing that because drivers are not looking for a little motorcycle along the curb. One little old lady wanted to turn left without looking so that was one brake there. Then there was another turning in at an intersection where a man with a flag was selling his lawn parking. We chatted about the traffic. I told him I was just looking for cheat parking. He said he had great motorcycle parking for $3. I said fuck that. Then rode right in and parked behind the Coors beer tent.
I had a chat with a few individuals about riding which I no longer do to work. There are too many folks in a hurry and not paying attention.
Bentley's stitches came out just fine. He's got another prescription. I went to pick it up at WalMart which they had but said it wouldn't be ready for 45 min. well I didn't want to leave Bentley in the car that long. I asked Alan to get the pills since I had to work the state fair. In the morning he wasn't home and I had forgotten that he told me he and Sean were going to Bloomington to fire his rifle at a longer range.

I went to the fair and worked the beer booth in "The Shed" with my son. Before my shift we ate Jerk Chicken at Ethnic Village. I got a T-Shirt that lights up and activated by sound. Great shirt for a beer booth with a band. Vendor was asking $30 and I offered $20. Settled in the middle. I was relieved of duties at midnight.

I made an appointment for Marley and Bentley at the groomers on Tues. I can drop them off on my way to work. I'll be using the grooming coupon I got in my basket from the American Legion Legacy Run auction. I talked with the owner and she's proud to support the cause. I told her what the vet said..."Bentley is probably deaf and don't clean his inner ear area" Then, Bentley heard his name and looked at me. Hmm! I got in my car to run errands and noticed that my car flashed the “Check Engine Soon” light. I went directly to my mechanic which was closed so I stopped by the Nissan dealer who told me that I would be fine to drive it but to come back ASAP next week. I figure that if I can wait, I’ll go to a local mechanic that won’t rip me off both in service and fees. Monday I dropped the car off and they gave me a ride to work. My driver hinted that there had been talks about moving the Illinois State Fair to Chicago. Oh yeah, that’s a Mecca for agriculture.

I got dressed up and off to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Well they called off RHPS since very few showed up. I did finally get to see the inside of this theater that had a for sale sign for a long time. Jeff said the resident ghost, Joe, was glad to see activity in the theater after being closed for so long. I’ll try to go next week but I am working the beer booth Friday.

My Week

Saturday my dog came home from the animal hospital in St Louis. He looks so pathetic. The surgery was tricky and He has his eyes open all the time. I have eye salve for him. Bentley bumps into everything with that cone on his head. Gradually he seems to be feeling better. The lab results showed a garden growing in his ear canals.

I tried out for the Rocky Horror Show cast at the Hoogland Center but was not selected. Although they said I could sing, which I said I could not, I did not make the cut. However, I also listed on my application my vacation that could really hamper practice schedules. No biggie!

After church, I got my Sunday paper and learned from the clerk at Casey's that the Sunday SJ-R is going from $1.75 to $3 next week. Not a gradual price increase. I guess we have to pay to have it printed in Peoria and shipped.

Sunday afternoon I went to the ABATE downed Rider benefit. I had a pork chop and got some raffle tickets. I bid on the silent auction but came home empty handed.

Wednesday evening on the way home, a car tried to move into my lane without checking and I had to defensively go on the inner shoulder of the 2-lane highway. Made me mad but as I passed, he held up the 2 fingered peace symbol. Thursday morning I met my next door neighbor on the corner at the stop sign. She told me that someone drove across her lawn about 6:30 and took out her mail box and brick retaining wall at a high speed. Ya know that the car had a lot of damage. There’s also a lot of crime steeling copper and the city wants to make the easy cashing of copper to recyclers a little more difficult. Where’s Batman!

Well, next time I won't plant zucchini so close to butternut squash. Butternuts look just like a zucchini when they are immature. Preparation is different.

I hung my humming bird feeder. My son said he already saw one earlier near the Cana.

I’ve been planning a Labor Day trip to the Quad Cities to see my sister. We hope to see the river front and IMAX Theater.

I let the dogs out in the back yard this morning and they ran to the fence to chase a cat. Well then I saw (actually heard first) a humming bird sipping from my Cana flowers.

Saturday I helped with the Purple Heart Veterans group viola campaign at county Market. I just said "please accept this viola on behalf of the Purple Hearts" to everyone. When I gave one to a woman in East India native dress, she put $20 in the bucket. I almost felt imposing since she obviously was not American. I'm impressed. After my shift, I went to take a picture of Sean and John from the Vet Center at their booth. We took in almost $2,500, which includes sale of Purple Heart hats. Subtracting them out we had donations of just over $2,400. One-third ($800) of what we collected will be donated to the Vet Center in food coupons and bus tokens.

Sunday I filled up Buck. According to the receipt it calculated the mileage to be 56.59 MPG

I was notified on Tuesday that my brother-in-law, Neal, had lost his long battle with pancreatic cancer. I was notified by my son but Kate didn’t want to disturb my work. Too late for that, I’d already let my mind stray. Neal went peacefully she told me. She prepared him for meeting God and his ancestors in Heaven. Although Neal was heavily sedated in hospice with a full time nurse, the nurse relayed that just before he died, Neal looked upward as if to see something/someone she couldn’t see. He then raised his arms upward. Wow, Neal surely saw the face of God. That brought tears to my eyes.

My dog, Bentley, had surgery in St Louis for a total ear oblation. My son did the transportation. I had credit for 6 months no interest for the fee which is about $2,400. During the prep for surgery, we learned he has moderate heart disease which could affect the amount of anesthesia they give. This will take the pain away but the heart problem may follow in a year or two. He came out of recovery in the evening and my son got a call that things went fine. Hope that when we bring him home, he can rest OK because in addition to having Marley (who is laid back) we are dog sitting for a hyper active Dottie Jack Russell. Dottie pooped in the house within the first half hour.

Wednesday morning I went to a PGR mission for a soldier in Virden, IL. It was real hot and humid. We held a flag line from 8:30 to noon in the shade with a few breaks. This young soldier had 4 children. I just had to drop my own salute to pull my camera out to snap this boy saluting his father's casket coming out of the funeral home. Next to me from the photographer’s position, I stood next to a gold star dad who was in yellow road construction shirt and said he was just passing by and noticed the flags and motorcycles and had to stop and pay his respects. I’d been told Jerry had been lookin’ to see if I was in the crowd. I had just returned from Hardees down the street for a bit of sustenance in all that heat drainage. I squeezed his hand and he welcomed the affection. He told me had not yet gotten the report on his son’s death which has been going on 9 months. I’ve added AmVets volunteer credit hours to our post for Don and myself for supporting this soldier’s funeral.

I finally got my permanent bridge after having ruined a tooth on Thanksgiving Day. I had to have work done little by little and even cross over to another fiscal year for the benefit of insurance.
I learned that the disk needed for my new little motorcycle costs $500 if bought from Yamaha so we are looking for a used part.

Wednesday evening I met with the American Legion riders to discuss our recent poker run. I was pleased to learn that for the youngest chapter in Illinois that our donation to the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund was twice the other chapters.

Friday through late Sunday I was in St Louis attending the Womens Overseas Service League’s biannual convention. Next will be in AZ in 2013. The convention was very well organized. The same hotel held an Army Career convention and ball and a family reunion as well. That would be me on the far left of this picture with the baldric going the wrong direction cuz I put it on while still on the hanger. Duh! Nobody told me so I changed it during the ceremony. This photo has me wearing it proper after the ceremony with fellow members of the Springfield Unit.

Face of Defense: Recruiter Saves Life on Dallas Freeway

DENTON, Texas, July 22, 2011 – When Army Staff Sgt. Marcus A. Stone saw cars suddenly braking and swerving ahead of him on Interstate 35 East in Dallas, he knew something bad had just happened on the freeway he was driving on. In the minutes that followed, Stone pulled a victim from a burning vehicle.

Those actions that December day prompted Stone’s commanding officer to nominate him for the Noncommissioned Officers Association of the United States of America Military Vanguard Award, presented annually to recognize acts of heroism.

Officer Susan Sharp, who was the investigating officer that day for the Farmers Branch Police Department, said Stone gave responders his recruiter business card and left the scene. Only after she compiled the statements from witnesses and drivers involved in the accident, who referred to Stone as “that Army guy,” did she realize how crucial a role Stone played, she said.

“Had Sergeant Stone not extricated [the victim], he would have burned to death within a minute or two,” Sharp said. “Stone didn't just save a life. He was the difference between a group of bystanders seeing a man rescued by one of America's heroic soldiers, versus seeing the man die a horrific death, burning right before their eyes.”

Stone, an Iraq combat veteran, said his Army training played a crucial role in his actions in saving the man that day. The Iraq experience, he explained, helped in that he was much calmer because he had already had enough pressure-packed situations in Iraq.

“It just comes down to being at the right place at the right time,” he said. “I’m just glad that somebody was able to continue their life, and I’m thankful that I was able to help someone in that capacity.”

Bus crash victims and hero soldier tell of rescue from fire, explosions:

Syracuse, NY -- William and Sandy Blair worried as they sat in row 8 of the Farr’s Coach Lines Ltd. tour bus on the side of the New York State Thruway early Friday in Junius Ponds.

At about 1:20 a.m., the bus pulled back onto the highway. It had just crossed the rough surface of the road’s shoulder when a Matrix Expedited Services truck carrying 14,000 pounds of ball bearing crashed into it.

At about the same time, Army Sgt. Jacob Perkins, 28, was driving his truck westbound. Perkins was stationed at Fort Drum in the First Squadron 89th Calvary Regiment and had served in Iraq. He was beginning a couple of weeks leave with a long drive to his home in Mountain Grove, Mo.

“It was just a big fireball of a crash. There were two vehicles burning on the side of the road and people were outside, but there weren’t any first responders there,” he said.

Perkins pulled his truck over.

“All of a sudden this guy came running. He ran right onto the bus that was fully engulfed in flames,” Michelle said.

Perkins said he didn’t hesitate. “They kept saying there were still people on the bus, so I didn’t really think about it. I ran in there.”

He helped a couple of people off the bus. “I pushed back farther into the bus to start checking the seats to make sure there was nobody in there. It was on fire. It wasn’t burning me or nothing. There was fire and smoke. When it got overwhelming, I just got off the bus,” Perkins said.

Michelle approached three state troopers on the side of the road. “My dad’s gone. We don’t know if he’s going to live. We need to get to where he’s going. How can we get there,” she asked.

The troopers said they didn’t know.

“Jacob (Perkins) was standing about 10 feet away. He said ‘I’ll take you anywhere you want to go. Get in my truck’.”

Perkins drove the Blairs to the hospital in Rochester. He gave them his cell phone to call family in Canada.

“I went into the hospital covered in blood, one sock, limping and a sports bra. They had no idea what was going on,” Michelle said.

The Blairs told the hospital what had happened, and said they were looking for William. The hospital told them he wasn’t there. He’d been re-routed to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

“We were in tears. We didn’t know what to do,” Michelle said.

Perkins told them “Get in my truck. We’re going to the other hospital. I’ll get you there.”

The sergeant drove 90 minutes back to Syracuse.

“Jacob stayed with us. He refused to leave until we had family here,” Michelle said.

Perkins stayed with the women until Sandy and William’s son arrived from Canada. Then he left.

The Blairs offered him cash in thanks. Perkins refused. Gas money? Nope. Cup of coffee. No thanks.

"He wanted nothing. He said, 'That's what people do for other people'," Michelle said.

Perkins, reached by cell phone at 10 this morning, was on the side of the road in Ohio where he had stopped to eat. He was still 8 hours from his Missouri home and 5-year-old daughter.

Sounding exhausted, he spoke humbly about his role in Friday’s crash.

“I just think it’s what anybody would have done in that situation. I just happened to be there.”

Major kudos to SSG Stone and SGT Perkins for taking action when they weren't required to do so, and saving lives in the process!

Wounded Vet Fights for Brothers

Mel "Buddy Lee" Dobberteen is paying it forward:

“My life was saved by Soldiers' Angels and Voices of a Grateful Nation.” So begins the story of musician and wounded warrior Mel "Buddy Lee" Dobberteen, who is now giving back to Soldiers’ Angels some of what he has received. “They helped me find a better way,” he says, “they turned me on to songwriting.”

From a benefit concert next week, to a brand new Soldiers’ Angels project for musical wounded warriors beginning today, Buddy is now passionate about helping his fellow veterans.

Buddy will be appearing at Sam's Burger Joint in San Antonio at 8:00 on Wednesday, July 20. Entry is $5 and funds raised will support Soldiers’ Angel Operation Harmony, musical projects for veterans in conjunction with Voices of a Grateful Nation (VoGN) and Yamaha Music and Wellness Institute. “I want you to hear my story, how Soldiers' Angels has affected me,” Buddy says, “so that you can go out and affect others.” In addition, 50% of the profits through the month of August from sales of his new CD, Second Chances will be donated to Soldiers’ Angels.

Even bigger, today kicks off the new songwriting program Buddy has created with Soldiers’ Angels to help wounded veterans. Working with songwriter Dustin Welch (Texas Country/Americana) and Yamaha, Buddy will be providing songwriting and recording opportunities to wounded veterans as both music therapy and career development. Yamaha is also building a recording studio in his house that will be used by program participants to record their newly-written songs.

FORT BENNING, Ga., May 19, 2011 – Army Sgt. 1st Class Ray Castillo is again flourishing as a senior noncommissioned officer at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., but that almost didn't seem possible two years ago after he was wounded on the battlefield.

Castillo was on his 10th combat deployment with the 75th Ranger Regiment in northern Iraq when he was severely injured by an improvised explosive device, injuries so serious that both his legs had to be amputated above the knee. Today, he's still a dedicated soldier and is set to graduate next week from the seven-week Maneuver Senior Leaders Course offered here.

"Just because I lost my limbs doesn't mean I can't give my experience and my knowledge to other guys, (but) I understood eventually I was going to be behind a desk," said Castillo, now an operations sergeant with 2nd Battalion. "There's nothing I could've done about that. I still wanted to be in the military, I still wanted to contribute."

The incident occurred Feb. 9, 2009, near Mosul. Castillo was a platoon sergeant with the regiment's 2nd Battalion with the unit in pursuit of a high-value target. The soldiers had dismounted and were approaching the objective on foot when they got ambushed.

A command-detonated improvised explosive device hit Castillo.

"It was real quick," he recalled. "(The enemy) hid it really well in the ground. I got to that location, and it just went off. I blacked out for a short period of time, but I remember the explosion going off and flying through the air."

Covered in blood, Castillo went into shock. A platoon medic treated him at the scene and he got evacuated within 30 minutes. On the ride to the hospital, he slipped in and out of consciousness.

"I was in so much pain," he said. "I told my medic, 'Hey, you need to give me something. I don't care if you punch me in the face or whatever, but I'm in so much pain.'"

Castillo had multiple lacerations, including to his liver, spleen, intestines and right kidney. A lung was punctured in three different areas.

After the blast, when he was dragged to a stretcher, Castillo said he remembers looking down and seeing his right leg severed at the ankle. He figured he might lose part of one leg, but woke up from an induced coma about a month later at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to find both gone. The infections had spread too quickly, doctors told him.

"I wasn't expecting to see 70 percent of my legs gone," he said. "Because of the infection, they had to keep cutting off more and more and more, because of all that bad stuff they have in the dirt over in Iraq."

He's undergone dozens of procedures, and not just to the legs. Doctors also removed shrapnel from his abdomen area.

"I lost count (of the surgeries). I had so many, I was sick of surgery," he said. "I still have a lot of shrapnel in me. Every once in a while, I'll get a scratch here or there 'cause it's trying to come out. It's all over the place."

There's a little ball of metal floating around a finger in his left hand. Castillo said X-rays at the dentist reveal more pieces in his head.

Castillo spent almost two months at Walter Reed and actually re-enlisted there in March 2009 from a hospital bed, surrounded by most of his family. He'd planned to re-enlist in Iraq before getting wounded.

"I would say it's more frustrating than difficult," he said of his lengthy recovery. "There's a lot of frustration that goes with having some type of new life. Everyone has a goal in life, and then when something happens, it can change."

"You can still stay on certain career paths and other paths you want to do in your life," he explained. "It can be difficult doing those things, but it's more frustrating. There are simple things that you have to try to overcome and adapt to."

After being transferred to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for rehabilitation, Castillo said he encountered other soldiers in worse predicaments.

"Looking at them being able to do certain things, it gives you strength," he said. "I remember seeing a woman in San Antonio - she had both arms gone. She was an (explosive ordnance disposal) soldier missing both arms up high. The wounds were so high up her shoulders that she couldn't have a prosthetic arm."

"Seeing someone like that reminds you, 'Hey, you shouldn't be complaining about certain things.' You don't want to have someone always helping you out, because they're not always gonna (sic) be there," he said. "In Texas, they taught (me) how to do stuff on (my) own. I had to figure a lot of things out and learn how to overcome those little obstacles and hurdles."

Castillo was fitted with prosthetics in May 2009. That November, his formal therapy ended and he left Fort Sam Houston the following January. He returned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord but had to clear a medical evaluation board just to stay in the Army - his paperwork was approved four months later.

"My focus was just to get back to my unit," he said. "I worked really hard every day as much as I could because that was my main focus - recovery and getting better so I could get back to my unit and continue working."

Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning Command Sgt. Maj. Chris Hardy was the 75th Ranger Regiment's command sergeant major when Castillo got wounded in Iraq.

"His personal courage and commitment is truly an inspiration to us all," Hardy said. "He epitomizes the warrior ethos - I will never quit, I will never accept defeat. He symbolizes the strength of the American soldier and I feel privileged to know him."

Castillo said he's driven to stay in the Army and wants to reach the 20-year mark in his Army career. He said he would like to become an instructor after his time with the Ranger Regiment ends.

He did a tandem jump at the Ranger Rendezvous in August 2009, only months after the ambush, and plans to return again this year. Calling the regiment a "brotherhood," Castillo said he knows some of the other Rangers better than his own family, and vice versa, after all they've experienced together in war.

The learning process also hasn't ended in his own recovery. Just walking downstairs, along a sidewalk or grass, and downhill can be challenging.

"Even when it snowed in Washington state, just going through the snow and it being slippery, I don't feel where I step until I put my weight on it," he said. "I drive, too, and that's a learning curve. My endurance and balance are getting much better. Being able to do random chores around the house or just doing stuff at work is getting better. It's gotten easier, with time."

CAMP BASTION, Afghanistan, June 14, 2011 – Some of the heat has burned off as the summer moon rises overhead. An airman labors over scrap wood in a makeshift workshop under a canopy of camouflage. Fitting pieces of wood together, the shape of a tiny coffin emerges.

When the contract providing coffins for deceased Afghans expired, members at the hospital here immediately began making alternative plans. Americans stepped in to continue the role after their British counterparts brought the deficiency to their attention.
"[British army Maj. Martin Smith] came asking to see if our airmen would help out," said Air Force Lt. Col. Barbara Persons, commander of the 451st Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron Detatchment 1 Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility. "I didn't even hesitate. I knew my airmen would feel the same way as I did -- anything to preserve the dignity of an innocent child."

Soldiers’ Angels calls on all Americans to actively observe Memorial Day this May 30 by participating in an official Moment of Remembrance or undertaking other acts in honor of the over 1.3 million service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Established by Congress, National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause in an act of remembrance for one minute on Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time. The Moment can be as informal as ringing a bell, a moment of silence, a prayer or singing at a concert, etc.

Additional acts of Memorial Day remembrance can include the following:

Visit a local VA hospital to learn the stories of patients’ fellow soldiers who never came home
Use blogs, Facebook or other online resources tell the stories of family members who died in service to the country
Read the names of fallen heroes on websites such as Honor the Fallen.
Throw a care package party or write letters of encouragement for a hard-hit unit or the Mortuary Affairs units that care for America’s fallen heroes (for info, email events@soldiersangels.org)
Visit a local military cemetery or memorial to stand in quiet solidarity with those who have lost their brothers and sisters in arms on the battlefield

Wedding Dress Essay Contest

Due to a donation from a lovely bridal boutique, Soldiers’ Angels has on hand sixteen gorgeous wedding dresses that will be awarded to sixteen lucky military brides! Dresses will be awarded by contest, with the brides who write the best essay about their own love story receiving their choice of dress.

Dress sizes range from 6 to 14, with a size 24 and a size 42 as well. Some are brand new, others have been rented, but all are clean and in superb condition. Most are very detailed, with additions of lace, cutouts or sequins, and styles vary greatly.

Originally offered to a high school drama department who refused them for lack of room, the dresses came to Soldiers' Angels thanks to Patreece, whose husband heard about them through his civilian job on a military base and alerted her. She took home all 16 dresses, cataloged and photographed them, and shipped them to San Antonio for dry cleaning and distribution.

Operation Tenshi Report Options

From a Soldiers' Angel in Japan...

I just wanted to let you know I received all the boxes for Operation Tenshi. I got the phone call to come pick them up NOW, so off I went.

Our post office is also ran by local Japanese postal workers. When they took me in the back to get the boxes, seven of them escorted me and waited for my response when I saw them. I just smiled, then they asked me, "What are you doing with so many boxes?" I told them that Soldiers' Angels sent these to me to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami on mainland. They just could not believe it and one of the ladies started to cry. She went to the back and workers told me she just couldn't believe the kindness of Soldiers' Angels and all the Americans that support us. She came back out and hugged me and told me to tell you that she thanks you from the bottom of her heart and will forever be grateful. It was a moment I will never forget. Thank you and the warehouse who worked long and hard. I miss you all and I am singing your praises over here!

"Here are two pics I took as we began to create pallets to load up a flight headed out to Yokota Japan. We received 20 boxes of supplies from Soldiers' Angels. I was able to ship some out directly from the base post office to the MPO in mainland. The other half went to another location where our military are camped."

"I just wanted to send you a few pictures of the Stork's Nest Pantry. This is the island's version of a Fisher House but for the high risk pregnant military mothers and their familes. There are about 5 or so cottages that support these families and we also have moved more that came in into our temporary housing lodging. As you can see, the pantry is small and bare. We are working to get them the supplies, but buying here in bulk is difficult due to stock availability and transportation [because of the earthquake and tsunami]."

Did you know that you can have a direct role in supporting the marriages and family life of returning heroes under great strain? You can, with a simple bookâ€¦

â€œChaplain Hâ€ explains via email to the Chaplain Support Team (CST),

â€œI am starting to work on some family reintegration programming and need some help acquiring a significant amount of books in order to facilitate a quality program that would provide the greatest opportunity for families to reconnect in a healthy manner. I know this is a large request below, but I am not expecting all of it. I am though merely setting my long range goal in this department.

Our unit is in a tough spot on this issue, with the stressors of redeployment and instant reassignment. The story will go something like this. The unit gets home mid-summer at Fort _________ and is expected to PCS to Fort _________ by September 1, 2011. Moreover, the School District will start classes around 15 August, which will increase the rush to get to the new duty assignment.

The list of stressors on our families are redeployment, family reintegration, immediate moving and getting settled. The level of stress that our families will have to endure has the potential to scar and even bring about the destruction of families if the situation is not readily addressed. My solution is as follows:

An extremely large marriage retreat (which is paid for with grant money already procured), family social events, reading materials and books, and some follow up.

Chaplain Harris went on to list eight different books, with copies of 25 to 150 needed for each title. Under the guidance of the CST, over 150 books have been procured so farâ€”including the entire set of 25 for two particular titlesâ€”but more help is needed.

CST Leader Dina explains, â€œIf you can buy just one book on this list, it will make a gigantic difference. If you can contact your communities, churches, therapy offices, send email to bookstores requesting even a single book, we can do this to help him. It matters, Angelsâ€”every single copy matters. Scour your used bookstores, Goodwill, Salvation Armyâ€¦blog the need, Facebook the need. ANYTHING will help.â€

Regardless of the challenge, there is no doubt that when patriotic Americans pull together, we can make miracles happen. Would you like to adopt a deployed hero but don't think you can take on the financial responsibility in these challenging times? The need for adopting Angels is huge, and there are options no matter your situation. In some cases, all you need is a single care package item, or even just your packing skills!

Team Up with a Friend -- Whether it's your office mate, best friend, the family next door or a retiree from church, tell someone about Soldiers' Angels and adopting a hero. Together you can split the costs of sending just one care package a month and take turns writing that one letter a week.

Bring a Group Onboard -- Talk to your company about supporting an individual or a unit. Participants can donate a single item for a care package or a couple dollars of postage each month. All you have to do is pack it up! This is a great option for community organizations like sports teams/clubs, churches, youth groups (scouts), schools and Chambers of Commerce. By working through a group, everyone helps as they can and another soldier knows he or she is not forgotten. When you've assembled a group that would like to support an individual hero or a whole unit, email groups@soldiersangels.org for tips and assistance.

Be a Substitute Angel -- Do you know someone who says they're just too busy to adopt a soldier? Offer to do it for them! You can take on the responsibility of writing a weekly letter to your adopted hero while your co-adopter takes just five minutes per month to order pre-made care packages for your hero from the Angels Store.

Short-term Adoption -- Sometimes service members sign up for support just a couple of months before they are scheduled to return. By the time they get to the top of the waiting list, they only need an Angel for about two months before mailstop begins. To adopt one of these heroes for three months or less when available, email special@soldiersangels.org to be placed on the short-timers alert list.

One-time Care Package -- This is a great option if you can't take on the responsibility of long-term support right now. You can have the fun and satisfaction of assembling a great care package whenever you have the opportunity, and all the cooperative suggestions above can apply. With each person doing what they can, we will all ensure that "No Soldier Go Unloved." Let's pull together and get these 1300 waiting heroes adopted!

Elementary school principal and author Megan Egerton-Graham is donating 5% of her individual book sales to Soldiersâ€™ Angels!

Egerton-Graham is fast becoming widely-known among military families in both Canada and the United States as a great resource for tips, insight and information that helps children and parents cope. Her "While You Were Away" series of books and journals are designed to support families experiencing periods of prolonged absence or deployment, moving, re-integration or just life as a military family

All of the proceeds from Egerton-Graham's books are donated to military support organizations such as Family Readiness Groups. She approached Soldiersâ€™ Angels after she was tapped as a keynote speaker at this summer's Blue Star Mothers (BSM) conference and the president of BSM suggested she reach out to support Soldiersâ€™ Angels and assist military families that way as well.

PRTs are military teams that work with local government officials, U.S. government civilians and local military/police personnel to assist people in rebuilding or improving their neighborhoods. They spend a great deal of time away from the main bases and out in the countryside among the locals. This PRT, which is very isolated, received a large package from Soldiers' Angels while waiting to be adopted by individual Angel volunteers.

While on his journey Troy has suffered from kidney stones as well as injuries to his feet which have demonstrated potential medical danger and that without a full medical clearance from a Medical Professional its in his best interests to not continue his mission at this time.

Soldiers’ Angels will continue the previous and ongoing mission of supporting our nation's returning heroes and veterans that Troy Yokum’s efforts contributed to in support of veterans and their families.

Over on the Family Matters blog at Defense.gov, guest blogger Megan Just shares her care package experiences - both from the sending and receiving sides:

One of my most vivid memories of my deployment to Iraq is the adrenaline rush of receiving care packages. The arrival of a care package could instantly turn a bad day into a euphoric one. Receiving care packages was so important to me that I often wrote about them in my diary.

At the beginning of the deployment I wrote, "I received Eric's (my boyfriend) package today and I've been waiting all night to open it. I've been so looking forward to it that I don't want the anticipation to be over."

The next day, after opening his package, I wrote, "Eric's box was great. He sent my favorite fig sugarless cookies (which I am finishing as I write), a bunch of Cliff Bars and a variety of dried fruit. He also sent two issues of ‘National Geographic’ and ‘Climbing.’"

In that care package, Eric had also enclosed a small book he made that contained his favorite quotes, photos of us together and a long letter. My reaction to the book tugged at my heartstrings enough to nauseate you, so I'll pass on sharing that section of my diary here, but I can assure you, the book meant a lot more than the fig cookies and it is still a treasured item today.

Toward the end of deployment, even as the recipient of an estimated 50 care packages, I was still raving about them. "I love getting care packages," I wrote. "It is hands-on proof that somebody loves me. Opening them is like being a kid on Christmas morning. Each package contains a surprise and what is inside is additionally valuable because the contents are things that I can't procure myself."

While all care packages are great to receive, I did notice a difference in the emotional impact of a run-of-the-mill care package versus one where the sender put a lot of thought into selecting the contents and packaging them in a creative manner.

A run-of-the-mill care package contains generic items and things servicemembers can easily buy themselves at the Exchange on base or order online. A run-of-the-mill care package is one that might as well have been packed by one of the many web-based care package companies. See, the preparation of an exceptional care package cannot be outsourced. The preparation and thought that goes into a care package is half of its value and the servicemember can perceive this extra effort.

Read the whole thing. Some of her suggestions are better for when you know the recipient personally, but she also shares ideas you can use if you have adopted a service member who may not be able to share with you the things they would be interested in getting. It's always a good idea to be on the look-out for care package suggestions!

With the support of Soldiers' Angels, Artist Susie Allen of Colorado is now providing beautiful pencil or charcoal drawings of deployed service members as gifts of love and appreciation for their parents.

Spurred to action when she realized that instead of just sympathizing with the burdens of military families, she could do something to hopefully lift the spirits of parents worried about their deployed child, Susie conceived Operation It's Me. â€œIf I were waiting for the phone to ring and I ran to pick it up,â€ Susie explains. â€œI would want to hear, â€˜Hi, Momma/Honey, it's me!â€™ When the package with the deployed hero's portrait comes to the recipient and they open it, that portrait should say, â€˜Hi, it's ME!â€™â€

Operation It's Me is truly a gift of the heart from Susie. â€œWhen I first began thinking this through,â€ she says, â€œI pulled a daily affirmation card out of a pack of 50 and it said, â€˜Use your gifts to serve others.â€™â€ Thus, Susie's pencil and charcoal portraits of a deployed service member are available to the parents of that service member at no cost.

Jesse Dayton is one of the artists involved with Soldiers' Angels partner Voices of a Grateful Nation. This organization's CD, which includes Jesse's song, I'm Comin' Home helps fund activities that use music to help returning and wounded soldiers re-acclimate and recover.

I’m Comin’ Home tells the story of going to Iraq and coming home safely to live happily ever after. It has received rave reviews from soldiers and military families, and now has the attention of CMT.com (Country Music Television). The video is playing on the station’s website and is linked to a PSA about the efforts of Soldiers’ Angels and Voices of a Grateful Nation to use music to support the troops.

One result of the partnership between Voices of a Grateful Nation and Soldiers’ Angels is the new music lesson/therapy program at the warehouse, part of Operation Soft Landing. Along with Charlie Gallagher and musicologist and guitar teacher Craig Hillis, Soldiers’ Angels co-founder Jeff Bader has been developing and stocking a room to provide music lessons and performance opportunities for wounded veterans and those in transition to civilian life. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) issues such as hand/eye coordination or motor problems, and short-term memory challenges can all be improved through playing an instrument and listening to music.

The call went out for instruments in the last month, but so much more is needed and the hope is to expand Operation Soft Landing to locations around the country. All revenue Jesse receives from “I’m Coming Home” will go to support this project. Simply watching these great videos is a powerful way to help!

Dear Angels,

Today your help is desperately needed?
As the troop buildup in Afghanistan continues, facilities and
supplies are stretched?many of our troops are living in the most basic
and uncomfortable conditions. As part of the counter-insurgency
strategy, they are also leaving big bases and going into primitive
areas where they can?t easily buy hygiene supplies or even get hot
food. Just today a soldier sent us this:

I?m writing on
behalf of 10 soldiers attached to my unit. At this moment their
living areas are deplorable: one hot meal every other week, sleeping
on floors, no internet access, etc?My chaplain will make a trip to
that place in one month?. [They] need personal hygiene stuff?like
toilet paper, baby wipes, deodorant, soap, etc. This is the only way
they can receive help.?

style="font-size:12;">At the Combat Support Hospitals in-country and
the hospitals in Germany and stateside, Angel representatives are
constantly requesting more supplies. Roger Godskesen of Tactical
Medical Support says he is having trouble keeping up with the demand
for backpacks for the wounded, and MaryAnn in Germany describes how
busy things are at Landstuhl:

As you read this, patients are
being airlifted to Landstuhl hospital in Germany from Iraq and
Afghanistan. Highly skilled medical staff tend to them during flight.
Preparations are being made for their arrival at Landstuhl. Nursing
and surgical staff are called in.

As you read this, a patient regains
consciousness for the first time since being hurt and asks about his
buddies. Sometimes he must be told they didn't make it.

As you read this, other patients are
being prepared for departure to US medical facilities, where they
will begin their recovery. Up to 700 patients are medevaced to
Germany each month, making Landstuhl the busiest trauma hospital in
the world.

As you read this, our troops are
fighting so that you don't have to. They want you to go on with your
lives - that's why they do it. But we do have an obligation to let
them know we appreciate all they do for us. Please help Soldiers'
Angels show our nation's heroes that no Soldier, Airman, Marine, or
Sailor will ever go unloved.

As summer comes to Iraq and Afghanistan, the demand for ?cool ties,?
sand scarves, powdered drinks, sunscreen and lip balm is high, and
thousands of pounds of coffee are still requested to help our heroes
stay alert; On the homefront, Operation Top Knot baby kits for
infants with deployed fathers are flying off the shelves, and we have
shipped hundreds and hundreds of vet packs, phonecards and sets of
clothing for patients in the last three months alone.

The postage to continue this pace is staggering! We need your help!
Every donation of any size helps speed one more package for a hero out
the door to service members America remembers and supports them,
allows us to stand with one more expectant military mother facing
motherhood alone, and helps provide one more backpack to a wounded
hero.

grader who led her school in collecting items for wounded backpacks.
It?s amazing what one little person can do!

Vets run Soldiers' Angels Warehouse

Soldiers’ Angels proudly announces the opening if its first Angel-operated warehouse, staffed by four recent veterans and Angel volunteers. The warehouse consolidates and streamlines SA’s extensive packing, shipping and screen-printing activities in support of the troops, reducing the organization’s overhead expenses and providing an employment opportunity for veterans.

“It’s a better bang for benefactors’ bucks,” explains Soldiers’ Angels Operations Manager Toby Nunn, who oversaw development of the warehouse. Located across the street from Brooke Army Medical center in San Antonio, Texas—a city with the highest concentration of wounded and other active duty soldiers in the United States—the 10,000-square-foot facility reduces shipping costs for SA by its proximity to one of the largest targets of SA’s troop support efforts.

In addition to the reduction in overhead, the cost of paying for the warehouse staff itself fits the mission of Soldiers’ Angels by supporting veterans . “Staffing it with recent veterans helps provide a soft-landing for their transition to civilian life,” Nunn explains. “It surrounds them with like-minded people as they learn the corporate world.” This is especially helpful for those who may be struggling, Nunn says with enthusiasm. “You can’t say, ‘You don’t get it.’ Because you’re looking at a bunch of people who do.”

Another benefit of the location is its easy access for families with patients at BAMC who drop by for the relaxation of being among people who understand. Family members and mobile patients often find enjoyment in pitching in. “Right now we have a couple of families and even a Ft. Hood shooting victim helping out with the Holiday care packages,” says Nunn. “We’ve been shipping out about one semi per day.”

Next door to the warehouse is 3,000 square feet of exhibit space that will be used for military-themed book signings, video/movie screenings, SA leadership meetings, and more. Part of the exhibit space will house a permanent installation of the Tribute to Heroes and Angels museum, and the facility will also support a program of music therapy and music lessons for wounded veterans.

Soldiers' Angels co-founder Jeff Bader says the entire facility is more than a base of operations. “It will be a home--a home for our volunteers and supporters, our active duty and retired military friends, and most importantly a home away from home for our returning and wounded troops and their families.”

Rocky Horror Season is Upon us

I went to the Rocky Horror Show last evening at the Hoogland Center. I had a good time. Springfield turned out and filled the theater for this stage production. Now you have to understand this, Springfield is the capitol city and very reputation conscious so this is breaking loose. The cast and crew did an excellent job. I sat in the front row and made the usual script responses. I shared a balloon to volley around the audience before the show began to lighten up the virgins and introduce them to audience participation. Normally this balloon is to be popped during the flat tire scene but it was still bounced around at the intermission. I realized after the show and talking with the cast that they enjoyed my interaction. I guess it's as motivating to them as an applause. The orchestra was great too. Some of the music is a bit a challenge to emulate the original show. I plan to go again tonight but maybe in one of my other costumes.

My only dilemma is where to go next weekend....Springfield's show again, which I'll have seen twice, or the Peoria Player's midnight show. Either way, I can go to the show at Illinois State on Nov 1st. My friend and I will play Columbia and Eddie with the Samurai Electricians
on Nov 6 and 7 at the Tivoli in St Louis.

From Guns to Blogs

A group of gun enthusiasts led by blogger "Mr. Completely" recently turned their love of firearms into laptop computers for wounded warriors. For the third straight year, the Gunblogger Rendezvous in Reno, NV has made Soldiers' Angels Project Valour-IT its fundraising focus. In addition to a raffle, the registration form for participants this year included an option of donating to Valour-IT while paying the registration fee.

Things got off to a rocky start when PayPal shut down the online raffle that had been set up, but Brian David Crane of Lucky Gunner (one of the Rendezvous sponsors) stepped up to fill the gap, making for a fantastic fundraiser that brought in nearly $7000 from tickets alone.

And the gunbloggers didn't stop there! Thirty-seven blogging participants at the Gunblogger Rendezvous raised additional funds through raffle tickets purchased at the event in Reno, direct donations during the weekend, and funds from registration fees once expenses were covered. At the end of the Rendezvous, event sponsor NSSF announced their direct donation of $1000 to Valour-IT, leading to a grand total of $8243.80 raised for Valour-IT!

The Gunblogger Rendezvous is an annual "real life" meeting of an online community of about 125 bloggers who discuss firearms and 2nd Amendement issues (37 attended this year's event). Each year they include a charitable aspect to the festivities, and for the last three years that has been Valour-IT.
This year their activities included shared meals with lively discussion, a visit to the world's largest sporting goods store, target shooting events, and several friendly competitions.

Major Chuck Ziegenfuss, the co-founder of Project Valour-IT, was in attendance for the 2nd time and found himself stunned when he pulled his own name out of the "hat" during the 2nd part of the drawing.

Soldiers' Angels is proud and honored to receive such generosity from patriotic Americans who have found a way to celebrate their rights and favorite pasttimes while supporting the troops!

Vet GI Bill Problems?

WLF partners with White House and VA to get GI Bill payments expedited

The Warrior Legacy Foundation (WLF) is working with the White House and the VA to assist veterans who have been experiencing delays in GI Bill payments. Recently a number of veterans have not received payment for college expenses they are due in a timely fashion. This has caused financial hardship in an already difficult economy. This is unacceptable and WLF is committed to helping fix the problem.

Our leaders have been in contact with veterans officials at both the White House and VA and they agree this is a priority that must be addressed. They have dedicated resources and we will be working with them to expedite these payments and to ensure that systemic problems are addressed. We will provide assistance to veterans affected by this and connect them with the proper authorities to get them the benefits they earned. We appreciate the attention and help from both the White House and VA in rectifying this.

You may not be hearing about it on the news, but the fighting in Afghanistan has been very heavy, with many wounded moving through the military medical system. Our wounded heroes, their families, and the doctors and nurses who care for them desperately need our love and support. Please consider how you can help.

All summer we have been experiencing a very large number of incoming medevacs, particularly from Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the past several weeks have been even worse. We are in urgent need of the following items. Please help if you can. Please also pray for our patients and staff during this very difficult time. Thank you.

What does Santa do when his target is a hero in a war zone? He deploys a camouflage stocking, of course!

Illinois Solstice Sign vs Veterans Memorial Wreath

It’s been too cold to walk over and check on the Wreaths Across America Statehouse Wreath after the ceremony and subsequent relocation to the rotunda but I did so today. This wreath is our state’s gift to honor our Illinois veterans and is made by the same folks at the Worchester Wreath Company that decorate the graves in Arlington. Last year this veteran’s wreath was in the center of the rotunda. This year it is on the sidewall by the elevators. Our gifted wreath’s previous place of honor now has a solstice sign. The veterans who fought for freedom of speech, and are honored by this wreath donated to our state, have been replaced by the very freedom for which they fought.

My only regret is that it is too late in the season for this year's memorial wreath. Both will be taken down shortly but I'll never forget that the atheists have taken a step ahead of our fallen veterans.

It is extremely surprising that the Arab financed TV station in Dubai would allow this to air. Be sure and watch this, it is so powerful I have no doubt she now has very large price on her head. I also have no doubt it won't be on the net very long. She is one impressive woman.

Her e is a powerful and amazing statement on Al Jazeera television. The woman is Wafa Sultan, an Arab-American psychologist from Los Angeles . I would suggest watching it ASAP because I don't know how long the link will be active. This film clip should be shown around the world repeatedly!

Valentine's Day Card Drive for Troops

Let's show our troops we love and support them!! Let's help them chase away those after-Christmas blues!! We are now collecting Valentine's cards to send to our troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. If you wish to participate, please send light-hearted, silly, cheerful cards to this address:

Please make sure to leave the envelopes unsealed – every card is read before it is shipped, to ensure appropriate content.

I am also collecting "Hershey's Kisses" and "Hershey's Hugs" candy, and any other silly Valentine's candy you'd like to send – lollipops, candy hearts, etc. It's cold over there now, so we can, for the moment, get away with sending CHOCOLATE!

The cards can be handmade or store-bought... for that matter, they don't even have to be cards; a hand -written letter is just as wonderful! Let's all band together and overwhelm our heroes with support! This is a great project for Scout troops, churches, or other organizations to get involved with!

Do not let children play contact sports like football. These only lead to injuries and instill a violent, warlike nature. Encourage your child to play peaceful games, like "sports doctor."
